Tonight's the night, all are welcome, it's a potluck so bring something to share. But if not able come anyways. There is usually plenty.
Juletrefest December 16! 6:30 St John's
Lutheran Church, downtown Des Moines
Our popular Christmas meeting is coming up fast, and we hope to see all of you there! Children and grandchildren are more than welcome for this chance to celebrate a Norwegian Christmas and maybe even meet Julenissen, the Norwegian Santa Claus. Rumor has it he will be looking for snille barn (good children)!
The evening’s entertainment will as in years past be by Boone Fiddler Dave Swenson, who in addition to accompanying the carols as we stroll around the Christmas tree singing, will also play a few favorite tunes with his added comments.
The December meeting is always a very special potluck, showcasing our Norwegian (and other) treats, so please bring something to share, and your own place setting! Since this is a potluck meal, not just coffee, the meeting will start at 6:30 p.m.
A traditional entrée is the rice porridge, the very porridge our ancestors put out in the barn on Christmas Eve for the resident nisse (gnome or elf who cared for the livestock). Our julegrøt or Christmas Porridge conceals one blanched almond, difficult to see because of its color. If you are lucky enough to get it, do not eat it, and do not let anyone know you have it! The almond is the token that allows you to claim the marzipan pig, the traditional prize for finding the almond.
A number of items, including some from Norway, will be raffled off and delivered by the nisse and his helpers.
If you need a ride, please let someone on the board know, and we will try to arrange one. Some of our members no longer drive after dark. If you are aware that someone living near you could use a ride, please reach out to them.
Come ready to eat, sing, and have fun!
God jul!

Cultural directors
