Roots Capoeira is a 501(c)(3) cultural arts nonprofit developing resilience, creative problem solving skills, and self expression in youth and the broader Des Moines, IA community. Capoeira is an Afro-Brazilian art form that incorporates music, dance, martial arts, history, philosophy and teamwork. It was created in Brazil over 500 years ago as a fusion of cultures, rituals and traditions during t

he time of slavery. As Capoeira changed over time, it was disguised as a dance and then used as a tool to help free slaves from their oppressors. Under the direction of Mestre Chicote (CDO Paris, France), Roots Capoeira de Ouro is a community group that continues in the rich tradition of Capoeira by giving back to the community of Central Iowa. Our goal is to promote healthy living, build strong community relationships and share culture.

A huge shout out to those who cut fabric and sewed skirts together for this beautiful show!! Thanks to Kati Nizzi. Jill Gilmore. Brenda Hanson. Yolanda. the Htoo family. Bill Morris. Special thanks to Amy Morris for making the measurements and organizing the whole process! The girls LOVED going up on the stage with their colorful skirts! Thank you for making this night special for the kids. We will utilize the skirts again for a special dance and pictures for our cord ceremony in May!
