Closing out Hispanic Heritage Month by celebrating the people who make our community stronger!

Today, we’re highlighting Edward Castaneda, a former foster youth who is now a WAY Alliance mentor and Board Member!

Edward’s journey is a powerful reminder that our experiences can shape how we show up for others. By serving as both a mentor and a board member, he’s helping create the kind of community where young people feel supported, connected, and empowered to build their futures.

Hispanic Heritage Month may be coming to an end, but celebrating our stories, honoring our roots, and showing up for one another is something we carry with us all year long. ❤️

As Hispanic Heritage Month comes to a close, we’re celebrating the traditions, stories, languages, and shared experiences that remind us where we come from and the importance of belonging.

For youth in foster care, staying connected to their culture and community can be an important part of building identity, finding stability, and feeling understood. Having caring adults who honor their backgrounds, celebrate their uniqueness, and show up consistently can make a lasting difference.

At WAY Alliance, we believe every young person deserves a community that supports them, celebrates who they are, and reminds them they never have to navigate life alone.

What happens when “home” keeps changing? 🏠💭

For youth in foster care, instability can look like frequent moves, changing schools, disrupted relationships, and not knowing what comes next. Over time, that uncertainty can place a real strain on mental health.

💙 Stability matters.

A consistent, caring adult can help a young person feel supported, build trust, and move toward independence with greater confidence. Having someone in their corner can make a meaningful difference. ✨

💚 Mental Illness Awareness Week 💚

Mental health matters, especially for youth who have experienced foster care.

Young people in foster care may carry the effects of trauma, instability, loss, and major life changes. Having a trusted adult who listens, shows up, and provides consistent support can make a meaningful difference.

At WAY Alliance, we believe every young person deserves someone in their corner. Our mentors help youth build healthy relationships, navigate challenges, connect with resources, and work toward their goals.

This Mental Illness Awareness Week, let’s remind our community that mental health deserves to be talked about, supported, and taken seriously.

Did you know?

In Texas, 41% of children who entered foster care in FY2022 were Hispanic, nearly 3,900 young people.

Behind every statistic is a young person with their own story, culture, identity, family, hopes, and dreams. For Hispanic youth in foster care, feeling seen, understood, and supported can make a meaningful difference. Having caring adults who value their culture and help them feel connected and included matters.

🌟 Hispanic Heritage Month Spotlight 🌟

Meet Rob Ortega a CASA volunteer who shows up for foster youth by building meaningful, consistent relationships.

As a Mexican American and bilingual advocate, Rob uses his language and cultural experiences to connect with Hispanic foster youth and their families. He has supported teens in foster care, helped them find their voice, and encouraged them to advocate for themselves.

Rob’s story is a reminder that representation matters and that sometimes, simply showing up can make a lasting difference. 💙

🌟 Hispanic Heritage Month Spotlight 🌟

Meet Krizia Ramirez Franklin, a former foster youth and passionate advocate for young people in care.

After spending 16 years in the foster care system, Krizia turned her experiences into advocacy. She has spoken at state and national forums, advocated for foster youth at the Texas Capitol, and worked to expand educational opportunities and support for youth in and aging out of foster care.

Her story is a powerful reminder that lived experience can create meaningful change. 💙

This month, we’re celebrating the cultures, traditions, histories, and contributions of Hispanic communities, while also recognizing the importance of representation and connection for youth in foster care.

📊 Did you know? In Texas, Hispanic children make up the largest percentage of children entering and currently in foster care.

Every young person deserves to feel seen, understood, and supported. At WAY Alliance, we believe meaningful mentorship starts with building trusting relationships and creating space for youth to be their full selves.
