During the pandemic, Aquira needed to find affordable options for food near campus. One of her instructors recommended she stop by the Wesley to learn about the food pantry where students can shop for free groceries. She was hesitant to use this resource because of the stigma associated with food insecurity. “Before coming to the pantry,” she says, “my roommates and friends were working together to keep me afloat.”
When she did finally decide to check out the food pantry, Aquira was relieved by the welcome she received. Local church volunteers and student interns greeted her and helped her find exactly what she needed. “Everyone I met in the pantry was incredibly kind,” she says, “which definitely eased my feelings of shame for not having money to go to a grocery store.”
During Aquira’s time in college, the Wesley expanded our food pantry to also include personal hygiene items. Aquira says, “it meant the world to me,” to be able to secure the basic items she needed to thrive and focus on school. Aquira helped many of her friends and classmates by sharing about the food pantry and encouraging them not to be afraid to access the resources they needed.
The Wesley food pantry gives students like Aquira a consistent source of free groceries and hygiene items so they can achieve their goals without anxiety over their basic needs. Welcomed by caring staff and volunteers, students know they can always find help without conditions or stigma here. Volunteers, food drives, and financial donations sustain this vital ministry that accompanies students affected by food insecurity, helping them flourish. Aquira graduated from University of North Texas and completed her Masters’ degree at the University of Oklahoma before beginning a career in STEM. She says, “I will always be grateful to the food pantry for lending a hand in my journey to stability.”
