Fresh Air 🌬️August's Story
"The first time I came to the Welsey, I did not plan for it to become a regular part of my life. I heard that there was free lunch, so I drug one of my friends along to see what it was about. The food was what drew me in, but the community is what kept me coming back. As soon as I stepped into the building, I felt like I belonged there. Discovering the Wesley felt like a breath of fresh air. It introduced me to a community of people that I didn't know existed, and an environment I didn't know I was missing. Marianne and all of the friends I met through the Wesley have had a huge impact on my life. The Wesley was one of the first places I found on campus that felt totally and completely welcoming. Now I get to help bring others into our community and make our space even more welcoming and inclusive. I like to connect to others who are unsure or just starting out in their spiritual journey as the hospitality intern."

✨ love each other ✨
This Maundy Thursday, we are unboxing donations for our food pantry and resource room to be open during free lunch today. Many of our clients are preparing to graduate and have come by this week to donate things that they won’t need in their next chapter, but other students might benefit from. At the Wesley, we walk with students through difficult times and provide them comfort and community for their journey to stability. It is so gratifying when they see themselves thriving and their immediate impulse is to turn back to the needs of others. This is how Jesus says people will know we are His disciples, in our love for each other. Your prayers and generosity cultivate this grace on campus: the free gift of love and the call to grow in love under the weight of those gifts. We are grateful for our shared ministry together. Thank you!

During the pandemic, Aquira needed to find affordable options for food near campus. One of her instructors recommended she stop by the Wesley to learn about the food pantry where students can shop for free groceries. She was hesitant to use this resource because of the stigma associated with food insecurity. “Before coming to the pantry,” she says, “my roommates and friends were working together to keep me afloat.”

When she did finally decide to check out the food pantry, Aquira was relieved by the welcome she received. Local church volunteers and student interns greeted her and helped her find exactly what she needed. “Everyone I met in the pantry was incredibly kind,” she says, “which definitely eased my feelings of shame for not having money to go to a grocery store.”

During Aquira’s time in college, the Wesley expanded our food pantry to also include personal hygiene items. Aquira says, “it meant the world to me,” to be able to secure the basic items she needed to thrive and focus on school. Aquira helped many of her friends and classmates by sharing about the food pantry and encouraging them not to be afraid to access the resources they needed.

The Wesley food pantry gives students like Aquira a consistent source of free groceries and hygiene items so they can achieve their goals without anxiety over their basic needs. Welcomed by caring staff and volunteers, students know they can always find help without conditions or stigma here. Volunteers, food drives, and financial donations sustain this vital ministry that accompanies students affected by food insecurity, helping them flourish. Aquira graduated from University of North Texas and completed her Masters’ degree at the University of Oklahoma before beginning a career in STEM. She says, “I will always be grateful to the food pantry for lending a hand in my journey to stability.”
