Thanks for celebrating Ms. Burnquetta Johnson’s birthday week with us!

It has been great to read everyone’s memories. She certainly touched many lives.

We’re thankful that her family continues to want to touch the lives of children in our community in her name.

We are thankful to Ms Burnquetta Johnson’s Family for their donation and challenge to the community!

As her sister, Mrs. Carolyn Johnson Young says in this video: This truly is an opportunity for everyone!

If you were one of the members of her class at Westside or if you recognize this as her last classroom at US Jones, this is for you!

If she provided you with an endless amount of love and attention such that you always knew you were important while holding you to the highest expectations, this is for you!

If her quick wit ever made you laugh, this is for you!

If you miss her cooking, especially her lemon pound cake, this is for you!

If you know firsthand or have heard stories of how she helped hold the community together during a challenging time, this is for you!

And lastly, if you or someone you know accepted the Burnquetta Challenge and was swiftly disciplined, this is for you!

We’re celebrating Mrs. Johnson’s birthday all week, especially today, on her actual birthday!!

We’d love to share photos with her family if you have any! Here’s one of Little Sally Mackey with Mrs. Johnson, almost two decades ago. ❤️

Mrs. Johnson was one of those teachers you simply never forget. She was fiery, firm, and a rule follower through and through and she expected the same from everyone around her! But underneath it all was a tremendous love for children and a belief that every child deserved to be educated, encouraged, respected, and loved.

She held people to a higher standard while also having a special way of bringing people together. And years later, that legacy is still making a difference.

In her honor, her family has generously pledged $5,000 to the Demopolis Dream Center and is challenging our community to match it, bringing her memorial gift to $10,000.

What a fitting way to honor a woman who spent her life investing in children to help create a place where children will learn, discover, dream, and grow for generations to come. 💛

As the story goes: Every year, one brave student would take "The Burnquetta Challenge," daring to call Ms. Johnson by her first name. It never ended well for them (but we bet it always got a laugh)!

Now her family is putting a new twist on it.

Ms. Johnson's family has pledged $5,000 to the DREAM Center in honor of her heavenly birthday, Wednesday, September 23rd, and they're challenging YOU to match it.

Their goal is $10,000 total, which meets the Platinum level and, among other recognitions, includes a plaque with her name on the museum's entry wall forever.

This week, the Demopolis DREAM Center is honoring Ms. Burnquetta Johnson, a beloved teacher who opened doors for so many children in Demopolis. We are so thankful to her family for their generous donation in her memory, and they have a special challenge (we’re calling it The New Burnquetta Challenge) to share with you tomorrow.
