The Story Portal

The Story Portal aims to connect individuals to the vast world of shared experience through spontaneous and true storytelling.

The concept is simple: spin the wheel and tell us a true story about the topic you receive. Story telling is a fundamental human ritual. From cave paintings to Facebook posts, our histories transcend death and generations to act as a binder across landscapes, technology, and cultures. The Story Portal is today's invitation for experiences to be voiced and listened to by a rapt and sympathetic audi

ence. With only a stage, a microphone and speakers, and seating for friends or strangers, the setup is simple, yet the impact can be profound. Listeners sit in sympathy with the storyteller, tears streaming down their faces. A storyteller shrieks with laughter at his own folly. The aspect of public speaking creates an expectant environment, and the pressure helps the storyteller find the power in his or her own experience to express it.

This past December we at The Story Portal were presented with a financial grant opportunity to create an immersive art installation beyond our signature stage. A narrative was developed whose central character is Dr. Ezra Marcel. Ezra has crash landed in his airship on an island after being shot down by airship pirates. As he lay on the beach near death, a fairy revives him with a magic potion found only from the mouth of a dragon. As he comes back to life, he finds himself full of new ideas for invention and obsessed with finding this fairy that has saved his life. But the fairy is nowhere to be found. He begins to descend into madness, forgetting about his family and desire to get off the island where he is marooned. He builds the Story Portal, a steampunk time machine that transports him and all who use it into the past. He experiments in his laboratory on fairies he finds, but they lead him no closer to the elusive fairy that has saved his life. He also spends time in the makeshift study he has built, journaling, writing letters and flipping through photos of his long lost family and friends.

This immersive interactive installation was developed in just over 6 weeks, from design to delivery, with the amazing work of upwards of 40 volunteer artists, writers, builders and engineers. It was an honor to accomplish such a feat with so many talented Story Portalers.

Exciting news! We have been given a very generous grant from Love Burn, the regional Burning Man event in South Florida, to build a new Story Portal stage. Infinite thanks to the folks at Love Burn for their incredible support and encouragement to bring this art installation to life. Stay tuned for updates!
