❤️🖤💚 Happy Juneteenth ❤️🖤💚

Today we honor freedom, truth, resilience, memory, and the ongoing work of liberation.

Juneteenth reminds us that Black history does not begin with slavery and it certainly does not end there. Black history is ancient, brilliant, global, creative, spiritual, agricultural, intellectual, artistic, entrepreneurial, and deeply rooted in survival, joy, resistance, and community.

And still, we tell the truth.

Slavery in America did not end through one single moment. Freedom unfolded through a long and uneven timeline:

On January 1, 1863, the Emancipation Proclamation declared enslaved people in Confederate-held territory free, but that freedom was not immediately enforced everywhere.

On June 19, 1865, Union troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, and informed enslaved people that they were free — more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation. That day became known as Juneteenth.

On December 6, 1865, the 13th Amendment was ratified, legally abolishing slavery across the United States, except as punishment for a crime.

Juneteenth matters because it teaches us that freedom declared is not always freedom delivered. Justice on paper still requires action, enforcement, courage, community, and remembrance.

So today, we celebrate more than a date. We celebrate the ancestors who endured. We celebrate the families who kept going. We celebrate the culture that could not be erased. We celebrate the food, songs, stories, land, faith, artistry, brilliance, and traditions that carried us forward.

May Juneteenth call us to learn deeper, love stronger, organize better, protect our communities, honor our elders, teach our children, and keep building toward freedom in every generation.

Freedom is history.
Freedom is responsibility.
Freedom is memory.
Freedom is movement.
Freedom is still becoming.

Happy Juneteenth, Everyone
✊🏾❤️🖤💚🫶🏾

Today, we commemorate the emancipation of enslaved African Americans and celebrate the long-awaited arrival of freedom and equality. Juneteenth serves as a powerful reminder of the resilience, strength, and perseverance of the Black community throughout history.

*City facilities will be closed on June 19, in honor of the holiday.
