Marine Education Initiative

Marine Education Initiative MEI's mission is to empower youth to be leaders environmental conservation with hands-on learning

Marine Education Initiative (MEI) began with two key programs focused on responsible angling and working with fishing tournaments to provide donated fish to local soup kitchens, thus reducing waste at tournaments. The first Responsible Angling Education Program began in Boca Raton, FL with only a handful of young participants. The organization grew quickly and expanded to Miami, FL/Durham, NC/ Bim

ini, Bahamas/ Abaco, Bahamas/ Nassau, Bahamas. Since 2007, we have educated over 2,400 children, provided over 4,200 hot meals of fresh fish, and recruited over 700 youth and adult volunteers. Our proof of concept programming began in 2007 and we legally incorporated in 2012. Our efforts have been commended by numerous well-respected organizations such as: USA Weekend Magazine, The National Jefferson Awards, The Sodexo Foundation, SeaWorld Conservation Fund, and the North American Association of Environmental Educators. According to the United Nations, “by the year 2100, without significant changes, more than half of the world’s marine species may become extinct” and already “between 30-35% of the global marine habitats such as seagrasses, mangroves and coral reefs are estimated to be destroyed”. MEI’s Responsible Angling Education Program aims to combat these statistics and is the program we are requesting funding to support in addition to supporting our operation initiatives. Through this program we are educating and empowering future leaders of tomorrow to be better stewards of our precious marine ecosystem in South Florida. We are equipping our students with important knowledge related to marine science and conservation not often taught in the traditional educational system while also immersing them in the environment by getting them outdoors through the sport of fishing. Another flagship effort at MEI is our Fishing Tournament Donation Program. This initiative involves providing local soup kitchens with fresh fish from local fishing tournaments to reduce tournament waste. Every year hundreds of fishing tournaments are hosted around the country; thus, we have partnered with multiple fishing tournaments over the years, allowing participants to repurpose a portion of their catch by donating to a local soup kitchen. Our volunteers gut, clean, and filet the fish which is then dropped off at the soup kitchens where it is cooked and served. Those in need can seldom afford this incredibly valuable protein source, and often they need it most to supplement their nutrient-deficient diets.

Another great field trip in the books! 📚🌱

Last week we had the pleasure of hosting Dwight D. Eisenhower’s 7th trade class. The students deepened their knowledge about sustainable agriculture, and the significance of the nitrogen cycle. They also tried lots of new micro-greens!!

Last weekend was a big one!

Partnerships with and allowed us to share knowledge about hydroponic farming and sustainable fishing to 40+ students. Each student planted their own garden in a glove; with five different seed varieties, this activity displayed the accessibility of at home farming. 🌱 🧤

Additionally, each student went home with a brand new fishing rod! After learning about the significance of human impact on the marine environment, these students can now put sustainable fishing practices into action with their new rod! 🎣

Throughout the whole tournament, we also hosted a booth in the kids zone of the course. Special prizes were given to those who cleaned the sandpit of all the plastic waste!

Overall, such a successful weekend of making connections, sharing knowledge of alternative agriculture, and celebrating LIV golf! ⛳️🌱

Our Story

Marine Education Initiative (MEI), formerly known as Fishing for Families in Need (F4FN), was started using six fishing rods, five hundred dollars, and a desire to make a difference by a local 15 year old in Boca Raton, FL. MEI has two main purposes: The first is to provide free fishing clinics to socioeconomically disadvantaged children during the school year and summer. In these classes, volunteers teach the children the basics of the sport. The material covered ranges widely from such practical skills as knot tying to more didactic topics, like conservation laws.

MEI’s multi-week programs creates hundreds of responsible youth anglers, provides amazing volunteer opportunities for the community, and positively impacts local marine and freshwater ecosystems. The children in the classes become strong ambassadors for environmental protection and continue to educate their family and friends long after the classes end. This creates a movement for change in their community focused on marine conservation and better fishing practices. Our intent is to enhance these children’s lives by imparting on them skills and knowledge that will help them surmount obstacles and will empower them in their daily lives while also creating young ethical anglers who recognize the need to safeguard and preserve our marine ecosystems well into the future.

The second goal of the organization is to provide local soup kitchens with fresh, deep-sea fish. Those in need can seldom afford this incredibly valuable protein source, and, more often than not, they are the ones who need it most in order to supplement nutrient-deficient diets. We here at MEI recognize this dilemma and believe everyone deserves a nourishing meal, so we gather donations from local fishermen and tournaments. Volunteers gut, clean, and filet the fish, which is then dropped off at soup kitchens, where it is cooked and served. Suggestions and connections to fish suppliers are welcomed.

More recently, after Hurricane Matthew struck the Bahamas in 2016, we decided to assist our community partners in the Bahamas and the many communities impacted. This effort began with Hurricane Matthew during 2016 in Freeport and Nassau, then onto Hurricane Irma during 2017 in St. John, Virgin Islands and the Florida Keys. In 2019, Hurricane Dorian, a category 5 hurricane, struck Abaco & Freeport, Bahamas. Both of these islands were locations that we have offered our Responsible Angling Education Programs, thus we once again began to send support. We will continue to use our network to encourage others to support relief efforts following these devastating storms especially towards specific marine related initiatives.
