Always a pleasure hosting at our Aquaponics Center. We had an incredible time educating your students about aquaponics, sustainable agriculture, and the impacts of fertilizer pollution on our environment!🌱

Marine Education Initiative (MEI), formerly known as Fishing for Families in Need (F4FN), was started using six fishing rods, five hundred dollars, and a desire to make a difference by a local 15 year old in Boca Raton, FL. MEI has two main purposes: The first is to provide free fishing clinics to socioeconomically disadvantaged children during the school year and summer. In these classes, volunteers teach the children the basics of the sport. The material covered ranges widely from such practical skills as knot tying to more didactic topics, like conservation laws.
MEI’s multi-week programs creates hundreds of responsible youth anglers, provides amazing volunteer opportunities for the community, and positively impacts local marine and freshwater ecosystems. The children in the classes become strong ambassadors for environmental protection and continue to educate their family and friends long after the classes end. This creates a movement for change in their community focused on marine conservation and better fishing practices. Our intent is to enhance these children’s lives by imparting on them skills and knowledge that will help them surmount obstacles and will empower them in their daily lives while also creating young ethical anglers who recognize the need to safeguard and preserve our marine ecosystems well into the future.
The second goal of the organization is to provide local soup kitchens with fresh, deep-sea fish. Those in need can seldom afford this incredibly valuable protein source, and, more often than not, they are the ones who need it most in order to supplement nutrient-deficient diets. We here at MEI recognize this dilemma and believe everyone deserves a nourishing meal, so we gather donations from local fishermen and tournaments. Volunteers gut, clean, and filet the fish, which is then dropped off at soup kitchens, where it is cooked and served. Suggestions and connections to fish suppliers are welcomed.
More recently, after Hurricane Matthew struck the Bahamas in 2016, we decided to assist our community partners in the Bahamas and the many communities impacted. This effort began with Hurricane Matthew during 2016 in Freeport and Nassau, then onto Hurricane Irma during 2017 in St. John, Virgin Islands and the Florida Keys. In 2019, Hurricane Dorian, a category 5 hurricane, struck Abaco & Freeport, Bahamas. Both of these islands were locations that we have offered our Responsible Angling Education Programs, thus we once again began to send support. We will continue to use our network to encourage others to support relief efforts following these devastating storms especially towards specific marine related initiatives.
