On Endangered Species Day, we’re reminded that the fight to protect rhinos is far from over.

South Africa remains ground zero for the rhino poaching crisis — home to the largest rhino population in the world, yet one of the hardest hit by poaching. Even today, rangers risk their lives to protect them.

Wildlife Defense has stood in these reserves, witnessing both the beauty and the danger firsthand.

But there is hope.

In Uganda, rhinos are returning to the wild for the first time in over 40 years after being wiped out by poaching. Thanks to conservation efforts, rhinos from Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary are now being reintroduced into protected national parks.

This is what conservation looks like.

We may be only a small part of the solution, but we are proud to support the people and programs helping make moments like this possible.

🌱🌿This Earth Day, we're thrilled to welcome Aaron and Katie Harnish to the Wildlife Defense team! Aaron, a retired police officer, will serve as an instructor, and Katie, a former National Geographic Governor Teacher Fellow, will join as an ambassador - both bringing valuable experience and enthusiasm to the mission.

They'll be joining us this October to take part in our training mission in KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa - a meaningful step in safeguarding wildlife where it's needed most.

Gorillas are about to step into the global spotlight once again with A Gorilla Story: Told by David Attenborough on Netflix—and we at Wildlife Defense deeply hope that this moment brings more protection than pressure.

As we prepare to return to Bwindi Impenetrable Forest in 2027 for a mission dedicated to gorilla conservation, we’re reminded just how critical this kind of global attention can be.

David Attenborough says there is “more meaning and mutual understanding in exchanging a glance with a gorilla… than with any other animal I know.”

That’s it. That’s exactly it.

It’s what I’ve struggled to put into words since sitting with mountain gorillas myself—the feeling that something passes between you. Not human, not animal… just understanding. A recognition that you are both there, both aware, both connected in a way that feels too profound to explain.

Our hope is that this film helps the world feel even a fraction of that—and that it inspires not just awe, but responsibility.

Because when people truly see gorillas, everything should change. 🦍💚

This past weekend at the Paris Marathon, our incredible Team Rhino Paris runners didn’t just cross the finish line—they made a real impact for wildlife.

✨ Richard rallied when it mattered most and pushed through to the finish.
✨ Amanda achieved amazing results with grit, heart, and determination every step of the way.
✨ Ilan inspired us all with his commitment, energy, and passion for the cause.
✨ Rod couldn’t run, but rallied in support, stepping up with a $1,000 donation.

After more than 40 years, rhinos are finally returning to Kidepo Valley National Park 🦏🌍—a place where they were wiped out by poaching in the early 1980s. New rhino lives—walking, breathing, existing again in a place where they haven’t in decades.

And we have a direct connection to that!🫶

In January, Wildlife Defense spent three days in Kidepo with over 20 rangers, investigators, and the Chief Warden. We trained side by side, shared knowledge, and delivered critical equipment—including binoculars, tactical torches, hydration packs, DSLR cameras, high-quality IFAKs, steel handcuffs, and more.

And now—those same rangers are helping protect Kidepo’s new rhinos. 🦏

That connection is not lost on us. It’s humbling. It’s powerful. And honestly… it’s a little overwhelming. Because these aren’t just “rhinos returning.” These are individual lives, back in the wild after 40 years—and their survival depends on what happens next.

And that’s where our hope lives. We hope we did our job right. That what we shared and what we equipped them with makes a real difference when it matters most.🙏
