Got plans tonight? If not, spend part of your Friday evening with us at the Vinalhaven Grange aka Pleasant River Grange 492!

We’ll gather at 7 p.m. to discuss what we've learned about removing ghost gear Down East with one of our partners, the Penobscot Bay Waterkeeper. It’s free, and all are welcome!

If Sunday works better for you, head down to the Ice Wharf on Old Harbor Road at 9 a.m. In collaboration with Bean Maine Lobster, we’ll be diving near the ferry terminal to show folks how we pull gear from the seafloor. It’s a neat process to see – especially for the kiddos.

There’s more lost gear out there than people realize!

Last month, we surveyed Penobscot Bay near Vinalhaven using side-scan sonar technology. In just a few hours, we identified over 1,200 lobster traps.

With an estimated 5-10 million lost traps in the Gulf of Maine, advanced mapping tech is helping us target our removal efforts where they can have the greatest impact.

Ever wonder what happens after gear gets recovered?

This week, we processed 2,310 lbs of plastic at our Gouldsboro recycling site and delivered some of it to the Haystack Mountain School of Crafts Fab Lab, where it will be made into reusable materials.

For five weeks, we lived and worked on Hurricane Island, recovering 354+ traps from the seafloor.
