To reimagine our relationship with the Gulf of Maine is to recognize that its future is our future.

As we head into the 10th anniversary of , our founder, Buzz Scott, is headed to NYC to join explorer Josh Bernstein and a host of ocean advocates, storytellers, and changemakers from Xiye Bastida to Sylvia Earle.

Our work is based in Maine, but it’s part of something larger. The challenges our ocean faces know no borders, and neither do the solutions.

It was a pleasure to host General Oceans Foundation for another great visit! We started in Rockland at the Steel House for some sidescan sonar training before heading offshore.

Our work is cut out for us, with an estimated 17 million traps on Maine’s seafloor and hundreds of thousands added each year. Stay tuned for updates on what we found!

You’ve probably seen wire fishing traps piled high in yards up and down the coast. They’re tough to get rid of, especially once tree roots creep in.

This year, we’ve recycled over 170 tons of material from Vinalhaven alone, helping locals clear old gear so can happen. Check it out:

Earth Month is one month, but we work hard all year! Since the start of 2026, we’ve already processed nearly 10,00 traps.

Kudos to Matt Louis and the Gouldsboro crew!

All 2,000 traps in the yard have been processed and are now ready to be crushed. Thanks to their hard work, the site will be cleared in just a few weeks.

Attention: We’re accepting drop-offs at our Vinalhaven processing lot!

Please bring old traps to the Ice Wharf (70 Old Harbor Rd). If you’re unable to haul them over, send us a DM, and we can swing by to help.

This year, we’ve been hard at work turning effort into impact. Across our three facilities, we’ve recycled 5,389 traps, totaling 172.5 tons!

Gouldsboro: 486 traps (plus 2,000+ already processed that await recycling)
Matinicus: 957 traps
Vinalhaven: 3,946 traps
