The way we care for our elders has changed dramatically over the last century and not always for the better. 🕰️

For most of history, caring for aging parents and grandparents wasn't a question. It was simply what families did. But as the world changed around us (industry, shifting family structures, policy decisions) so did the way communities showed up for their seniors.

NPR recently covered a powerful new PBS documentary that traces this history, and one line from it stopped us in our tracks:

"We've taken this model to its very limit and we're all at the edge of the cliff looking down, wondering what to do next."

More seniors today live alone than ever before. The systems around them are strained. And yet what hasn't changed is this: people still need people.

That's why Janie's Light exists. A friendly face. A listening ear. A ride to a doctor's appointment. These things aren't complicated, but they are life-changing for the seniors right here in Elmore and Autauga Counties who might otherwise go days without any real connection.

She almost didn't open the door.

Margaret, 81, hadn't had a visitor in three weeks. Her daughter lives across the country, her closest friend passed last winter, and most days the silence in her small home stretches longer than she can bear. When our volunteer knocked, she hesitated — then slowly turned the k**b.

What happened next was simple. They sat together. They talked about Margaret's garden, her late husband, and the bluebird feeder she can no longer reach to fill. They laughed. And before the visit was over, Margaret asked, "Will you come back?"

That question is why we exist.

Janie's Light is built on the belief that no senior should face their days alone. We need YOU — volunteers who can spare a few hours a month to visit, to listen, and to remind our elderly neighbors that they are seen, valued, and loved.

You don't need a special skill. You just need a willing heart.

Happy Father's Day! 🌼

Today we're celebrating the fathers, grandfathers, and father figures who've shaped so many lives in our community, including the sweet seniors we have the privilege of visiting each week.

Many of the men we serve through Janie's Light spent decades as providers, protectors, and quiet examples of faith and steadiness for their families.

Some are still surrounded by children and grandchildren today. Others have outlived their own families and could use a little extra love this Father's Day.

If you know a senior father in Elmore or Autauga County who could use a visit, a phone call, or just someone to remember him today, that's exactly what we're here for.

To every father reading this: thank you for all you give. And to those missing their dads today, we're holding you in prayer too. 💛

✨ What an incredible couple of weeks for Janie's Light! ✨
We had the joy of sharing our mission with two wonderful church communities — Cain's Chapel and Millbrook First United Methodist!

Huge thank you to both for opening your doors and inviting us to speak. And to the volunteers who stepped forward afterward to serve our seniors — you are an answered prayer. 🙏

We're now close to halfway to our goal of providing friendly visits and transportation to 25 seniors every week in our area. Halfway there means halfway to go — and we can't do it without our community!

We held our first ever volunteer appreciation lunch today at Ingrams!

We're so grateful for Tim, Debbie, Elaine and Gail for being the very first to step forward with us in serving seniors in our community.

There aren't enough words to say how much we appreciate this group for being early adopters of our mission. They are an absolute testament to putting feet to faith.

Loneliness is a health crisis and it's happening right here. Isolation leads to a 30% increase in premature death. For seniors in Elmore and Autauga Counties, that risk is real.

But here's the truth: no program can replace a person.

Janie's Light volunteers show up with conversation, a ride to the store, a knock on the door and that changes everything.

You can be the light in our community. A few hours a month is all it takes to bring real connection into someone's life.

If you've ever wanted to learn more about what we do for seniors in our community — this is the perfect opportunity. Come hear our story and find out how you can make a real difference.

✨ A Story From Our Community

One of our precious participants doesn't ask for much. She simply needs a ride — just a short drive to the assisted living facility where her husband lives — so she can sit beside him, hold his hand, and spend a few hours of the day with the love of her life. That one ride means everything. It's not complicated, but it is sacred. This is the kind of difference a single volunteer can make.

We are actively looking for volunteers in Wetumpka, Deatsville, and Millbrook to support our seniors. Whether you can give an hour a week or just a few hours a month, your time is a gift that our seniors treasure beyond measure.
