The United States Coast Guard marks its 236th birthday on August 4, 2026, celebrating its long history of maritime safety, search and rescue, and national defense.

History and Origins
• Founded on August 4, 1790: Established when Congress authorized the construction of 10 revenue cutters under Treasury Secretary Alexander Hamilton.
• Original Name: Known initially as the Revenue Marine and later the Revenue Cutter Service.
• Modern Merger: Combined with the U.S. Life-Saving Service in 1915 to officially form the modern Coast Guard.
Service Details
• Oldest Continuous Seagoing Service: Serves as the oldest continuous maritime service in the United States.
• Core Missions: Enforces maritime laws, protects the marine environment, secures ports, and executes search and rescue operations.
• Personnel: Comprises roughly 43,000 active-duty members, 8,000 reservists, and 30,000 auxiliary volunteers.

Perfect weather for last evening's Veterans' Ceremony at the Fort Armstrong Folk Festival! The Veterans holding the flags in the picture are members of the Armstrong County Honor Guard. This group attends countless events and provides Honor ceremonies at Veterans' funerals. We are thankful for their dedication to the public as well as to our Veterans!
Did you know that the Folk Festival began in 1971 to honor and welcome home our soldiers? Happy 55th Anniversary!
