The Carl B. Kern Fund of The Dayton Foundation

The Carl B. Kern Fund of The Dayton Foundation This Fund promotes and supports the benefits of summer camp by paying tribute to the life and work of former Dayton YMCA Boys' Work Secretary Carl B. Kern.

Welcome to The Carl B. Kern Fund, one of over 3,000 funds which make up The Dayton Foundation, a non-profit community foundation located in Dayton, Ohio. Established in 1987, this Fund pays tribute to a person and an institution. The person is 'C.B.' Kern, Dayton Y.M.C.A. Boys' Work Secretary from 1909-1917, whose outstanding work with youth was evident from the many testimonials and resolutions m

ade in his memory after he died tragically and unexpectedly on June 3, 1917 at the age of 37. The institution is organized camping, which 'C.B.' recognized as one of those unique experiences which can have such a profound, positive impact on the physical, mental, and spiritual development of youth. "More of permanent value can be accomplished with a week in camp with a boy than months of casual contact", he wrote in a 1915 one-page report of the activities of his summer camp, Camp Ozone, which was subsequently renamed Camp Kern in his honor. Please feel free to browse the Kern Fund web pages (www.kernfund.org) and learn more about the person and character of Carl B. Kern, the institution of organized camping which he embraced so strongly, and the activities of The Carl B. Kern Fund which serve to perpetuate the memory of 'C.B.' and support "the experience that lasts a lifetime".

The Carl B. Kern Fund was always a passion of Stuart's, and arrangements have been made for the fund's continuance. In lieu of flowers, the family appreciates any contributions made to the fund in Stuart's memory.

The Kern Fund Advisory Board was very pleased to be able to present a check in the amount of $21,000 to YMCA Camp Kern on June 1st at its annual Strawberries and Ice Cream event. Along with the check, slides reviewing a short bio of the life of Carl B. Kern plus a brief history of the Fund were also presented. We're also proud to announce that this year's check pushed the total amount distributed to Camp Kern since 1989 past the quarter million dollar mark!

35 years ago today, a check for $1,000 was written to establish The Carl B. Kern Fund, an endowment fund within The Dayton Foundation [www.kernfund.org]. 35 years later, the Fund has raised nearly $520,000 and distributed over $230,000 to YMCA Camp Kern, with a fund balance of $580,099.37 at the beginning of 2022 (it's dropped a bit since then with the market!). This would not have been possible without the generous support of hundreds of donors. THANK YOU!! And if you'd like to support our efforts and donate online(!) - https://www.stwmd.net/kernfund/index.php?task=Donate%20Online

The 2022 3rd-quarter numbers are in. OK, it's not a pretty sight... The Fund's balance as of 9/30 was $437,749.18... But it will come back! And your year-end contributions will help! For details, see the 2022 Quarterly Summary Reports - https://www.stwmd.net/kernfund/index.php?task=Yearly&year=2022

Getting to Camp Ozone/Kern through the Carl B. Kern years and up thru 1920 usually meant taking the train from Dayton to Lebanon and then hiking to camp. Especially if you're a train fanatic, you might enjoy the following summary which includes recollections from campers and newspaper clippings: https://www.stwmd.net/kernfund/index.php?task=Train%20to%20Camp

Several "Camp Ozone/Kern Historical Tidbits" - specific topics, summaries, individual recollections - have been added to the Carl B. Kern Fund website highlighting the years that Mr. Kern was Dayton Y.M.C.A. Boys' Work Secretary and the influence he had on his boys and staff. More to come. The 2022 2nd-quarter numbers are in. If you're noticing that the Fund has a clean, fresh smell, that's due to the bath it has been taking since the beginning of the year(!) - not unexpected with market performance so far, but still a little disheartening... The Fund's balance as of 6/30 was $459,548.52. But it will bounce back, and we'll be sending out information again this September/October that will include an opportunity for additional donations, which may actually have a bigger investment bank for the buck. For complete details, see the 2022 Quarterly Summary Reports page:
