🚨National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Day🚨
Dayton, Ohio - City Government in partnership with Dayton Firefighters Local 136, will honor Firefighter Roderick W. Longpre—known to all who served alongside him as “Rockin’ Rod”—as he is formally memorialized this weekend at the National Fallen Firefighters Foundation Memorial in Emmitsburg, Maryland. Mayor Shenise Turner-Sloss, the Dayton City Commission, and the City Manager’s Office have committed to a series of tributes recognizing Firefighter Longpre’s sacrifice and the significance of National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Weekend.
Firefighter Longpre passed away on October 14, 2020, after a career of distinguished service to Dayton and the broader fire service community. A U.S. Army veteran who received an Honorable Discharge, he brought the same dedication to the Dayton Fire Department, where he built lifelong friendships and left a lasting institutional legacy. He was instrumental in co-founding the Miami Valley Firefighter/EMS Memorial Association and founded the Dayton Firefighters Local 136 Honor Guard—both enduring contributions to the profession he loved.
His addition to the National Fallen Firefighters Memorial stands as a testament to a life defined by service—first to his country, then to his city, and always to his fellow firefighters.
How Dayton Will Honor Rod
In recognition of National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Weekend and Firefighter Longpre’s inclusion in the national memorial, the City of Dayton will:
• Issuance of a formal mayoral proclamation recognizing National Fallen Firefighters Memorial Weekend and honoring the life and sacrifice of Firefighter Rod Longpre. (To be read at Commission Meeting 5/6/26)
• Lower flags to half-staff at City of Dayton Fire Stations and other facilities throughout the memorial weekend.
• Display red lights across prominent fixtures as part of the “Light the Night for Fallen Firefighters” initiative.
A Legacy That Will Not Be Forgotten
“Firefighter Longpre’s service, sacrifice, and his commitment to this community and our profession represent the absolute pinnacle of public service. His name being added to the national memorial is both an honor and a profound reminder of the cost of the work our firefighters perform every day.”
— Dayton Firefighters IAFF Local 136
