How does prairie grass respond to multiple fires?

Big Bluestem (Andropogon gerardii)

Root biomass, shoot biomass and flowering stalks ALL INCREASED with more fires.

Big Bluestem Flowering Stalks (after 10 years)
0 burns = 3 stalks/sq ft
2 burns = 3 stalks/sq ft
3 burns = 5 stalks/sq ft
4 burns = 12 stalks/sq ft

Big Bluestem Root Biomass (after 10 years)
0 burns = 8,000 lbs/ac
2 burns = 10,000 lbs/ac
3 burns = 11,200 lbs/ac
4 burns = 11,600 lbs/ac

Big Bluestem Shoot Biomass (after 10 years)
0 burns = 3,200 lbs/ac
2 burns = 3,200 lbs/ac
3 burns = 5,200 lbs/ac
4 burns = 12,100 lbs/ac

Now is the perfect time of year to see JUST HOW BAD invasive Bradford Pears spread. As you drive in and out of cities and towns, notice the abundance of white trees covering native landscapes. It's a perfect teaching opportunity for children.

The word is being spread more and more year after year about just how bad these trees are on our native landscapes. It's time to take action. Often times after the flowers fall and they’re jot as noticeable, they’re forgotten. Bradford Pears (callery pears) must be killed with herbicide. Just cutting them down will NOT do the trick. They have to be properly stump treated with herbicide or they will resprout.

Trees that have resprouted are more difficult to kill, as they don't have as much leaf area above ground (to treat with foliar herbicide applications) as they do root mass below ground. And there is not one trunk that resprouts to cut and stump treat, but multiple small stems that resprout from around the original trunk.

Checkout our website for information on invasive Bradford (Callery) Pears.

Dear Santa,
I haven't asked for anything for many years now, but I write to you this year hoping you'll bring me a shiny new drip torch and good fire weather so we can do many prescribed fires in 2024.
