Arizona leaders are standing up for wild horses. ‼️

American Wild Horse Conservation is proud to join Representatives Juan Ciscomani (AZ-06) and Rep. David Schweikert (AZ-01) in calling for fair, lawful, and humane management of Arizona’s Salt River and Heber wild horses. 🐴

Wild horses are an important part of Arizona’s heritage and the American West, and they deserve protections that reflect both the law and overwhelming public support. In a recent Arizona Central poll, approximately 97% of respondents supported protecting wild horses, a powerful reminder of how deeply Arizonans value these iconic animals.

“For too long, the Salt River and Heber horses have faced cruel and improper removal, and we must ensure they receive the protections they deserve.” — Juan Ciscomani

We are grateful to Juan Ciscomani and Rep. David Schweikert for their leadership and commitment to protecting Arizona’s wild horses for future generations. 🤎

The Wild West shaped more than just the history of America, it shaped the spirit of the country itself. It was a time defined by resilience, freedom, movement, and life lived untamed across vast open landscapes.

But the story of the West was never only about people. The animals of the frontier were deeply woven into its history and survival, especially the wild horse, a lasting symbol of strength, freedom, and the untamed spirit of the American West.

From carrying people across rugged terrain to roaming freely through open plains, wild horses became part of the identity and legacy of the frontier itself. Alongside bison and the wildlife that once covered the plains, they helped shape the rhythm, culture, and story of a country still finding its footing.

Their presence wasn’t just part of the landscape; it became part of America’s history. 🤎🌾🐴

The system was created to protect wild horses. 🐴

Instead, it has become a costly cycle of roundup, removal, and long-term confinement.

Helicopter roundups remove horses from public lands. Thousands are placed into holding facilities, often for the rest of their lives, while taxpayer costs continue to rise and the cycle repeats itself. ⚠️

Meanwhile, humane, science-based alternatives like fertility control remain underused.

This is why so many advocates say the system is broken.

When roundups happen out of public view, accountability disappears with them.

That is why witnesses matter. Documentation matters. Public pressure matters. ‼️

These decisions shape the future of wild horses and the American West and they should never happen without visibility or scrutiny.

If real reform is possible, it starts by making the system impossible to ignore. ‼️

As the United States approaches its 250th anniversary, the image of the American West continues to live on through its wild horses, symbols of freedom, resilience, and the untamed land that helped shape the country itself.

For generations, they have been part of the story of the West: running across open landscapes, woven into the history, mythology, and identity of America. 🌾

But just days before the nation celebrates 250 years of independence, one of the largest wild horse roundups in recent history is scheduled to begin in Callaghan on July 10. Thousands of wild horses face removal from the very land they have roamed for generations. ‼️ ‼️ ‼️

At a moment when the country reflects on its history and heritage, it raises a larger question about what parts of the American West are still being protected, and what is quietly disappearing from it.

The wild horse has long stood as a symbol of the frontier, freedom, and the spirit of the West itself. As this milestone anniversary approaches, their future has never felt more uncertain.

Because preserving America’s heritage isn’t only about remembering the past, it’s also about protecting what remains today. 🇺🇸🐴

Freedom leaves a trail.

When wild horses run across the American West, they leave behind more than dust.

They leave a reminder of what wildness looks like, movement without restriction, instinct shaped by the land, and a freedom that has defined these landscapes for generations.

In a time when wild spaces continue to shrink, moments like these remind us what is still here, and what is worth protecting.🌾

Because some of the most powerful symbols of freedom were never meant to stand still.🤎

‼️A MAJOR WILD HORSE ROUND-UP IS COMING ‼️

And it is about much more than one herd.

Callaghan is not an isolated event.

It is one visible signal of a larger pattern of land management decisions that continue to shrink wild horse habitat and remove horses from public lands across the American West.

These roundups do not happen overnight.

They are the result of long-building pressures: shrinking habitat, outdated management systems, and policies that too often prioritize removal over humane, science-based on-range solutions.

By the time helicopters arrive, the decisions have already been made.

That is why paying attention now matters.

What happens at Callaghan will make visible the larger system shaping the future of wild horses and the public lands they call home. 🇺🇸

Because protecting wild horses does not begin at the moment of crisis.

It begins when people understand what is at stake early enough to act.

This is where the larger story becomes impossible to ignore.

Stay close. The West is still worth protecting. 🌾

Statement from American Wild Horse Conservation:

American Wild Horse Conservation is deeply disturbed by reports that three horses were stabbed during the National Barrel Horse Association competition in Las Vegas. Our thoughts are with the horses, their owners, riders, and everyone affected by this senseless act.

Whether wild or domestic, horses occupy a special place in our lives and deserve to be treated with respect, compassion, and care. Intentionally inflicting harm on any equine is an act of cruelty that should be taken seriously and investigated thoroughly.

We support efforts to identify and hold those responsible accountable. Acts of violence against horses are not only crimes against individual animals, but offenses against the values of humane treatment and stewardship that horse lovers across the country share.

American Wild Horse Conservation remains committed to promoting the welfare and protection of all equines and stands in solidarity with the broader horse community in condemning this act of cruelty.

‼️ BIG WIN FOR AMERICA’S WILD HORSES AND BURROS ‼️

Today, the House Committee on Appropriations took a major step toward humane wild horse and b***o management by requiring that at least $7 million be directed toward the implementation of existing immunocontraceptive vaccines in the FY27 appropriations bill. 👏🐴

For years, advocates have fought for science-based solutions that keep wild horses wild and free instead of relying on costly helicopter roundups, removals, and long-term holding facilities.

Today, Congress sent a clear message: humane fertility control must be part of the future.

👏 AWHC is grateful to Representatives Ciscomani and Pocan for their leadership and to Representative Titus for helping rally congressional support behind increased fertility control implementation.

⚠️ But this victory comes at a critical moment.

As thousands of wild horses remain at risk of removal across the West, including at the upcoming Callaghan roundup in Nevada, the need for humane, on-range solutions has never been more urgent.

This is real progress. But the fight is far from over.

Together, we must continue pushing for policies that protect wild horses and b***os where they belong: free on our public lands. 🤎
