Generation O: The National Organization for Opioid Exposed Children Our mission is to improve outcomes for opioid-exposed children and provide support and guidance to their families.

The Annual Research Review takes a different approach to understanding prenatal opioid exposure. Rather than focusing only on the child, the researchers examined how experiences across two generations—the pregnant mother and the child—work together to influence outcomes. The review summarizes evidence on how opioid use disorder, trauma, stress, poverty, mental health challenges, stigma, access to care, and prenatal opioid exposure can interact to affect both maternal well-being and child development.

Happy Father's Day to the dads who became what their kids needed them to be, no matter what it took. ☀️

The ones who learned every therapy technique, sat in every waiting room, advocated in every IEP meeting, and loved their Sunshine Kid fiercely through every hard day and every breakthrough.

This one's for you, Dad. Your Sunshine Kid loves you. You're doing a great job.☀️

Today, Generation O is presenting at the first-ever National Opioid Settlement Conference in Denver, CO. We're filled with passion and energy, ready to share the stories of children and families across this country who deserve far more financial support than less than 1%.

"Children are resilient." We've all said it. We've meant it as a compliment.

But for the professionals who work with opioid-exposed kids every day — the teachers, the social workers, the OTs, the speech therapists, the pediatricians, the policymakers — you know what resilience actually costs a child. It means they had to survive something they shouldn't have had to survive.

That's why we do this work. Not to flippantly applaud how much kids can endure, but to reduce what they have to endure in the first place.

We're turning 2️⃣ and celebrating with a fundraiser that fuels our mission. This tote carries a message we hope sparks conversations — in waiting rooms, at IEP meetings, in legislative hallways, and everywhere in between.

📣 FREE WEBINAR!

Shari Shine has spent more than 35 years supporting children with neurodevelopmental differences and the families who care for them. After 18 years in public education, she founded Play N Parent and later NeuroLearn, where she has worked with children experiencing developmental delays, sensory processing challenges, autism, apraxia, attachment difficulties, and nervous system dysregulation.

Drawing from extensive training in neurodevelopmental approaches, sensory integration, reflex integration, listening therapies, and trauma-informed practices, Shari specializes in helping families understand the connection between brain development, the nervous system, and behavior. Her work emphasizes a simple but powerful belief: behavior is communication, and children do well when they can.

A passionate student of Polyvagal Theory, Shari helps caregivers and professionals understand how the vagus nerve and autonomic nervous system influence emotional regulation, stress responses, learning, and relationships. Through practical examples and real-world experience, she translates complex neuroscience into strategies that foster empathy, connection, and lasting change for children and families.

This morning, Jeanine Nordin, Director of Generation O's Florida Office, and Lenette Serlo, Generation O's CEO & Founder, spoke to families raising children who were exposed to opioids during pregnancy at Florida FAPA's 2026 Convention. Their presentation was titled, "Raising Opioid-Exposed Children: Understanding the Constellation of Challenges and Supports That Make a Difference". They facilitated a great Q&A afterward and we're so thankful for the opportunity to help support and guide families in this way!

🚨TOMORROW!🚨

Have you heard of Pathological Demand Avoidance (PDA)? How about low-demand parenting as a strategy for neurodiverse children? This month’s Insights LIVE dives into both topics and explores how low demand parenting may be a helpful framework for opioid exposed children.

Hosted by Kim Cortes, Director of Programs at Generation O, and a parent coach with ten years of experience in the disability field. Kim also holds a Level 2 certificate from PDA North America. Finally, she is a mom to two opioid-exposed kids and has found a low demand approach to be transformative for her own family.

Dropping demands goes against almost all “typical” parenting advice, but it just might be the key to more peace and regulation in your home. Join us and find out.
