Excavations and monitoring in West Palm Beach uncovered the remains of the floor of one structure, likely one of the boat repairs houses, based on its location and associated rails for hauling boats in and out of Lake Worth. The site was denominated the Mangonia Boatyard. The boatyard structures are depicted in the 1920 Sanborn map. Approximately 12 by 4 meters of the floor as characterized by a wooden structure consisting of wide planks supported by beams, was uncovered 1.70 meters below the fill. Associated artifacts included iron fasteners, a boiler, and glass bottles. In addition, a crankshaft was found in the fill, and likely fit for a steam engine found in 1972.

It is unclear what the buried structure is, although Archaeologist Odlanyer Hernández de Lara says it’s not a boat. [JAMES WOOLDRIDGE/palmbeachpost.com]
