Sisters Adriana Noriega and Angelica Noriega, who founded Coconut Hound Haven Punta Cana, were always animal lovers and did what they could to help animals in need. They made the decision that the Punta Cana area needed a shelter and decided to take on that task. They traveled to the DCDR shelter in Luperon to get some ideas on how to set up their sanctuary which began a relationship between the t

wo organizations. They bought land in 2019 and finished construction of the facility in January 2020. It was originally called Puntacan Animal Rescue. In January of 2020, all involved decided it would make sense to team up with DCDR and Coconut Hound Haven Punta Cana was christened as a shelter under the DCDR umbrella. In January of 2022, we started partnering with the rescue group Rescatame to provide free spay-neuter clinics to street animals and those owned by Dominicans in need. Rescatame is in the process of merging into DCDR to create one unified organization helping the animals of the Punta Cana area. DCDR has two sanctuary locations in the Dominican Republic: Punta Cana, and Luperon. DCDR works hard to:
- provide free spay/neuter clinics to help reduce the stray dog population
- find homes for street dogs both in the Dominican Republic and abroad in countries like Canada
- provide emergency vet care for animals in need
- provide education and preventive medicines to owners of animals in the Dominican Republic.

Meet Gingerbug !

She was found abandoned on a country road 😢
She appeared to have had some sort of injury to her paw that had already began to heal. Our volunteers picked her up to have her spayed and later took her to Dr De La Cruz for the paw to be looked at, he confirmed the fracture would need to be repaired and DCDR stepped up to help with the surgery.

Gingerbug is now at Callie Greenshields home, for her much needed recovery time.

If you would like to support Gingerbug’s recovery, please consider sending a donation through https://www.dcdr.org/donate or send us a private message for information about other options.

THANK YOU ❤️

The "NO MORE MOTHERS" Mother's day Spay Neuter clinic was held yesterday at the Dream Project School in Cabarete. Another 43 animals will go on to live healthier and happier lives now. Many Thanks to Dr. Gisselle Santos Diaz and her wonderful team for spending their Mother's day helping the animals. Also, thanks to the Thomas Rosato Foundation, Compassion Sans Borders and the other wonderful people that donate, for sponsoring these life saving clinics. We have such awesome volunteers that make these clinics run so smoothly, for which we are also greatly appreciative. 💙🌺 Mother's Day in the Dominican Republic: Celebrating the Mothers Who Change Lives 🌺💙

Today is Mother's Day in the Dominican Republic, and while many are celebrating the incredible mothers in their own families, we wanted to take a moment to recognize some very special moms—both human and animal—who quietly make a difference every single day.

As we have highlighted recently, DCDR finds many ways to help animals on the island, even when our intake is closed. We can't save every animal ourselves, but we can share resources, support local caregivers, and work together to reduce suffering wherever possible.

One of those caregivers is a woman who lives beside a garbage dump about 30 minutes east of Cabarete. She lives in extreme poverty herself, yet she spends her days doing what she can to care for the hundreds of animals struggling to survive there. She may not have much, but she gives what she can—her time, her compassion, and her determination.

One of the ways she helps is by working with DCDR to bring unfixed cats to our spay and neuter clinics. Today, at our clinic in Cabarete, one more cat's future changed because of her efforts.

The photos in this post show a young mother cat that she recently brought to us. Still just a kitten herself, she had already given birth to three kittens of her own. Only one of those kittens—the tiny survivor shown in the second photo—made it.

Today, that cycle stops.

This young mom will no longer face litter after litter while trying to survive in impossible conditions. Her surviving kitten now has a better chance at a healthier future. And none of it would have happened without the collective efforts of so many females: the woman who cared enough to help, the volunteers and veterinarians running today's clinic, the donors who make these programs possible, and the mother cat herself, who did everything she could for her babies.

On this Mother's Day, we celebrate all of them.

Because whether they walk on two legs or four, mothers are often the quiet force behind countless acts of love, sacrifice, and survival. Together, they are changing lives—not just in one community, but across the island and around the world.

Happy Mother's Day to every mother, foster mom, rescuer, volunteer, supporter, and animal mama who makes our work possible. 💕🐾

It’s Caturday and sweet little Scrunchy J has one very important question… 🥺

“Why has no one adopted me yet?”

Honestly, we’re wondering the same thing. This little guy is the total package — adorable, gentle, playful, and an absolute purring machine. Scrunchy J loves cuddles, attention, and being close to his people. The second you pick him up, the purr motor starts. 💛

Scrunchy was found all alone near a river during the flooding when he was only about 2 weeks old. After being bottle fed around the clock in foster care, he has grown into the happiest, sweetest kitten and he’s more than ready for a forever family of his own.

He’s healthy, beyond lovable, and waiting patiently for someone to realize he’s the perfect addition to their home.

Could that someone be you? 😻
