Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. was founded on January 13, 1913 by 22 collegiate women at Howard University to promote academic excellence and provide assistance to those in need.
The Danville Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta, Incorporated was chartered April 6, 1946 as the Gamma Gamma Sigma Chapter. The charter members were: Clara Hoffler Clark, Carrie H. Coleman, Signora L. Collins, Irene Gordon, Vergie Hobson, Virginia Mack Johnson, Hortense Person Martin, Fannie C. Owens, and Elizabeth Holland Trent. The elected president was Carrie H. Coleman. The vice-president was Fannie C. Owens. In fall of 1946, eight members were initiated into Gamma Gamma Sigma Chapter. In 1960, the Gamma Gamma Sigma Chapter became Danville Alumnae Chapter.
The Danville Alumnae Chapter service region includes the City of Danville, VA, Pittsylvania County, VA, Halifax County, VA, and Caswell County, NC. Our programs in these communities focus on Educational Development, Economic Development, Political Awareness and Involvement, Physical and Mental Health, and International Awareness and Involvement.
