When going through a divorce one often feels so alone as though no one else has ever gone through it, but manny others have, and the good news is that so often coming through it to the other side you will find you are better for doing it, so don't be afraid. Be strong, be confident, and believe in yourself. I just read this and thought it was worth sharing:
"While many were shocked by the Gate's divorce, these stats may be even more alarming: In the years between 1990 and 2012, the divorce rate for people 55-64 doubled. For those older than 65, that number more than tripled. Nevada, Arkansas, Oklahoma / Utah / Wyoming / Idaho, Alaska / Alabama have the highest divorce rates while Illinois, Louisiana, Massachusetts, Iowa, Kansas have the lowest....."

Most people are divorce novices and face a steep learning curve in this very emotional time of change. Divorce Angel is a group of professionals who have considerable experience working through the choices and results of separation and divorce. You'll meet empathetic, highly capable people who offer guidance on dividing assets, real estate management or sale, family restructuring, creating a new and separate financial life, and the legal requirements and ramifications of marriage dissolution.

Each meeting is different, we ask participants to bring their burning questions so we can structure the meeting to the needs of the people in attendance. We look forward to meeting you and helping you work through this challenging period of life.

Divorce Angels meets every month. Last night was an interesting session regarding the financial implications of buying your spouse out of the family home. Things to think about: can you get a mortgage on your own? What is your tax basis on the home when it comes time to sell? Guess what...your tax basis will be on the Original Purchase Price of the home, not what you bought your spouse out for. Why does this matter? Depending on how long you have lived in the house, you may have significant appreciation, which will now create a large tax event. Because you are no longer married, you do not have the $500,000 tax deduction, but instead only have a $250,000 deduction.
..The point of all of this is, it is important to be forward thinking when in the midst of a divorce and trying to divide assets. Seek advice from a Financial Adviser and a CPA. We have seen so many people a few years after their divorce financially struggling because they made emotional decisions without thinking through the financial implications.
