This is exactly why CHD awareness matters. ❤️ Increased awareness leads to more research, more funding, and ultimately, groundbreaking advances like this that can change the lives of heart warriors. 🫶

Today, we approved the first heart valve device designed to grow with children. The Autus Size-Adjustable Valve, a surgically implanted pulmonary heart valve for pediatric patients with congenital pulmonary valve disease can be expanded after surgery to keep pace with growth. The adjustable valve may mean fewer repeat surgeries for children as they get older.

Congenital heart defects are among the most common types of birth defects in the United States, affecting about 1 in every 100 births. The valve was approved through the premarket approval pathway, the FDA's most rigorous review process for medical devices.

Congenital heart defects (CHDs) are the most common birth defect, affecting approximately 1 in every 100 babies born — yet they remain one of the most under-researched areas of birth defects. Today, we’re raising awareness for the heart kiddos and families who face CHDs every single day, while celebrating the incredible strength, resilience, milestones, and triumphs of our heart warriors. 💙

Every heartbeat tells a story. Today, we celebrate those stories and remind the world that CHDs deserve to be seen, understood, and researched.

September is NICU Awareness Month, and we know that for many of our heart families, the NICU is where their journey begins. Kabuki syndrome is especially near and dear to our IMHNE community, as it's a genetic condition that is often associated with congenital heart defects. If your Heart Warrior or Heart Angel spent time in the NICU, we’d love to hear their story and have the chance to feature them in one of this month’s Heart Warrior Spotlights or Heart Angel remembrance posts. 💚
