Meet Brendon Brown

💫 Henry Abbott Technical High School (Danbury, Connecticut) Graduate

💫 Introduced to The Hord Foundation back in 2015, through a shop teacher at Henry Abbott, who talked about the scholarship process since his freshman year.

💫 Student at the University of Hartford, where he majors in Communications with a double emphasis in Public Relations, Advertising and Media Strategies and double minors in Marketing and Cinema.

💫 Educational and Career Goals: “I just plan to use the collective knowledge of my degree to enter the PR field, and hopefully rise through the ranks relatively quickly just because that's my work ethic.”

💫 Advice for College Students:

⭐️ Give back whenever you can and lookout for opportunities.

⭐️ Networking is important first and foremost.

⭐️ Join a club, get involved in some sort of way.

✨Introducing Ms. Taylor Bryan✨

Facts about Taylor:

💫 Danbury High School Graduate, Class of 2022

💫 Student at the University of Connecticut, double majoring in Psychology & Human Development and Human Family Sciences with a minor in Sociology.

💫 Introduced to The Hord Foundation through former principal of Broadview Middle School and The Hord Foundation Board Member, Dr. Edie Thomas.

💫 Educational and Career Goals: I would love to go to school and get my Masters and then (eventually) my PhD, because I want to be a psychologist one day and I want to be the best I can be. So, after my undergraduate I’m going straight into my Masters. In doing so, I just want to help anybody in my community get the help that they want, because when I was in high school, I know I was looking for a therapist myself and I preferably wanted a black therapist. The only black therapist in my area was my mother. I kind of want to be that black therapist for somebody else, who is going through similar things like I was.

"I HAVE A DREAM” (1963)
Encouraged by shouts from an audience of 250,000 people, gathered near the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. drew upon some of his past talks, and the result became the landmark statement of civil rights in America — a dream of all people, of all races and colors and backgrounds, sharing in an America marked by freedom and democracy.
What's your dream for today?

What? When? How?

Families will come away with new ways to think about this journey, as well as a timeline and other important resources. The information presented will be most useful to parents and students in 9th – 12th grades, but all families are welcome.

Registered attendees will receive a unique Zoom link 24 hours before the event and the webinar will be recorded.

PSP wants everyone to have the opportunity to attend their informational webinars. If you are experiencing financial hardship, please email: [email protected]

Deena will discuss:

🎓 What to be thinking about each year of high school and how to separate fact from fiction.

🎓 How have colleges changed their processes in the past few years?

🎓 What questions should parents and students consider when building a balanced college list?

🎓 What does test optional mean?

🎓 What are the differences, advantages, and disadvantages of Early Action, Early Decision, Regular Decision, and Rolling Decision?

There will be plenty of time for Q&A and follow-up resources will be sent to all registrants.

"We really just wanted to give back and thank The Hord for what they’ve done because we never took the money that we got for granted. Our parents moved us for a better education. So, for all of us to go through the respective universities that we went to and for all of us to get degrees is remarkable, and then also to get support from our community and specifically The Hord Foundation is what means a lot to us. So, that’s why we decided to give. Also, we wanted to give to similar families in our similar situations, which is why the scholarship is not really major driven; it’s really driven by first generation immigrant or first generation college students, because that’s what we were."

The Omokaro family moved to the United States from Nigeria in 1997. Cynthia, Desmond, Emmanuel, Lynda, and Osazee were all Hord Scholars and received scholarships from the Foundation throughout their four years of college.

The Omokaro Family Scholarship was created for first generation students or first (or second) generation immigrants, who will be attending college for the first time. The family is passionate about giving to this specific group of college-bound individuals and supporting them financially.

The full interview will be published in the next issue of The Hord Foundation's newsletter - Coming Soon!

FROM HORD SCHOLAR TO BIOENGINEER . . .

For this week's Throwback Thursday, we are speaking with Brianne McGill, The Hord Foundation's Overall Excellence Recipient (2017).

A few facts about Brianne:

💫 High School: Ridgefield High School (Ridgefield, Connecticut), Class of 2017

💫 College/University: Lehigh University (Bethlehem, Pennsylvania), Class of 2021

💫 Degree: Bachelors in Bioengineering

💫 Current Residence: Ledyard, Connecticut

Her thoughts about college and a bit of advice:

"I would say that I definitely experienced a lot of transformations throughout each year of college, but my piece of advice comes as a result of my freshman year. Talk to your advisors and professors. I messed up my class schedule freshman year, which caused a domino effect up until senior year. I took too many humanities and not enough engineering courses as a freshman. So, I ended up taking a lot of my technical classes on the backend, which is supposed to be your easier year. So, don't do that!"

"I would also say, don't be afraid to ask for help, because I was often stressed about money. Eventually, I reached out to the Financial Aid Office and I discovered that they have emergency relief money for students. So, asking for help is not a weakness. I often take it as a sign of weakness, but it was really what got me though college; everyone there pretty much wants to see you succeed."

Learn more about Brianne's journey in the next issue of The Foundation's newsletter - Coming Soon!
