THIS DAY IN MARINE CORPS HISTORY
September 2, 1945 — The War Is Over
On September 2, 1945, aboard the battleship USS Missouri in Tokyo Bay, representatives of Japan formally signed the documents of surrender, officially bringing World War II to an end.

Representing the United States Marine Corps at this historic ceremony was Lt. Gen. Roy S. Geiger, Commanding General, Fleet Marine Force, Pacific. Geiger had succeeded Gen. Holland M. Smith after Smith returned to the United States in July 1945.

For the Marines who had fought their way across the Pacific—from Guadalcanal and Tarawa to Iwo Jima and Okinawa—the signing marked the end of a long and extraordinarily costly journey.

Today, we remember those who fought, those who came home, and those who never had the chance.

Their courage helped secure the peace celebrated aboard the Missouri 81 years ago today.

REMEMBERING THE ABBEY GATE 13 🇺🇸

On August 26, 2021, during the final days of the evacuation from Afghanistan, a su***de bomber attacked Abbey Gate at Hamid Karzai International Airport in Kabul.

Thirteen American service members were killed while carrying out the mission of helping evacuate Americans and Afghan civilians to safety. Among them were 11 Marines, one Navy corpsman and one Army soldier.

Today, on the anniversary of that tragic day, we pause to remember the Abbey Gate 13 — not simply for how they died, but for how they lived and served.

They were young men and women. Sons and daughters. Brothers and sisters. Friends and fellow warriors. And in their final hours, they continued to serve others in the midst of extraordinary danger.

We remember their names. We honor their courage. We will never forget their sacrifice.

THIS DAY IN U.S. MARINE CORPS HISTORY
August 24, 1814 — Battle of Bladensburg

More than 200 years ago today, Captain Samuel Miller and a 100-man detachment from Marine Barracks, Washington, joined American sailors in the defense of our nation's capital during the Battle of Bladensburg in the War of 1812.
Facing advancing British forces, the Marines helped repel three enemy charges. Captain Miller was wounded in the fierce fighting, and as British troops began moving around both American flanks, the Marines and sailors were nearly encircled. They were ultimately forced to withdraw to avoid capture.
The cost was heavy: 8 Marines killed and 14 wounded.
Although the British went on to enter Washington and burn several public buildings, the courage and determination shown by the Marines at Bladensburg became part of the Corps' long tradition of standing their ground when the odds are against them.
From 1814 to today, that legacy of courage, commitment and service continues.
We remember those Marines who fought—and those who fell—in defense of our nation's capital.

A NATIONAL MEMORIAL COMES TO DANA POINT

♥️🤍💙From October 27–30, Heritage Park will be home to Remembering Our Fallen, a powerful national traveling memorial honoring the men and women of our Armed Forces who made the ultimate sacrifice in the years since September 11, 2001.♥️🤍💙
Created by Patriotic Productions, this moving exhibit is unlike a traditional memorial. Its tribute towers feature both military and personal photographs, allowing us to see our Fallen not only in uniform, but as they were known and loved by their families and friends — as sons and daughters, husbands and wives, mothers and fathers, brothers and sisters.
Each photograph tells a story. Each face represents a life of service, sacrifice and love that must never be forgotten.
We invite our community to visit Heritage Park, walk among these powerful tributes, reflect on the price of our freedom, and say their names. Remember their faces. Honor their sacrifice.

The exhibit will be in Dana Point in conjunction with the October 28 dedication of Returning Home, our community's permanent tribute to service, sacrifice, military families and the joy of coming home.

🍼💙 Oh, Baby! What a Shower! 💗🍼
Our DPSG Baby Shower was filled with smiles, laughter and a whole lot of love as we celebrated our Marine Moms-to-Be — and the New Dads joined in the fun, too! 👶
There was lunch, games, prizes, arts & crafts and plenty of fun. But the biggest surprise came when our expectant families saw what was waiting for them — laundry baskets overflowing with baby essentials, goodies and gift cards, PLUS cases of diapers for the newest little members of our Marine family! 🧺🎁🍼
Because anyone who has ever had a newborn knows there is no such thing as too many diapers! 😂
These baby showers are about much more than gifts. They are our way of letting our young Marine families know that while they serve our country, there is a community here that cares about them, supports them and celebrates life's biggest moments right alongside them. ❤️🤍💙
A huge THANK YOU to our wonderful volunteers and our Friends of the Fifth whose generosity helped make this special day possible. A special thank you to the Stanley W. Ekstrom Foundation and the Daughters of the American Revolution, who are always supportive of our families, and It's All About the Cake, who donated those incredibly beautiful cupcakes!
And to our Moms and Dads-to-Be — congratulations! We can't wait to welcome all those adorable new additions to the Fighting Fifth family! 👶

🍼💙 Getting Ready to Shower Our Marine Moms-to-Be! 💗🍼

More pics to come, but we thought we'd show you some "behind the scenes" of getting ready for the Baby Shower for our Ladies of the Regiment.

There’s a whole lot of love—and a little organized chaos!—happening with our amazing DPSG volunteers getting everything ready for a very special Baby Shower honoring more than 20 Marine Moms-to-Be! 🎀👶

From decorating and arranging gifts to filling laundry baskets with all the little things new families need, our volunteers are making sure these expectant moms know just how much their Fighting Fifth family and Dana Point community care about them.
Saturday may have been about the babies, but today we’re celebrating the volunteers whose generous hearts make moments like this possible.💖

From their temporary base in Darwin, Australia, U.S. Marines are ranging across the Indo-Pacific—training alongside our allies, strengthening critical partnerships and demonstrating their readiness wherever duty calls.
Among them are Marines from our own 1st Battalion, 5th Marines — the Fighting Fifth. 🇺🇸

Meet Sgt. Reckless — the Marine Who Had Four Hooves! 🐴

She may have been small, but Sgt. Reckless had the heart of a Marine.
During the Korean War, the little Mongolian mare became a legend while serving with the 5th Marine Regiment. Trained to carry am******on for the recoilless r***e platoon, Reckless proved just how fearless she was during the brutal Battle for Outpost Vegas in March 1953.
In a single day, she made 51 trips between the am******on supply point and the firing positions—many of them by herself—carrying desperately needed am******on up the mountain and bringing wounded Marines back down. She traveled more than 35 miles that day, much of it under enemy fire.
Reckless was wounded twice, but like any good Marine, she kept going. ❤️

She wasn't simply a pack horse. She became part of the unit—sharing the Marines' tents, eating alongside them (and occasionally helping herself to things she probably shouldn't!), and earning their love and respect.
For her extraordinary service, Reckless received two Purple Hearts and numerous other military honors. She was eventually promoted to Staff Sergeant.
And there's one part of her story that we're especially proud of:

❤️ Sgt. Reckless was one of the Fighting Fifth, and DPSG is was one of the supporters who had the memorial created.

Her courage, loyalty and determination embody the spirit of the Marines she served beside.
🐴 Semper Fi, Sgt. Reckless. Once a Marine, always a Marine—even with four hooves.
