The Gulf of Catalina Gray Whale Preservation & Education Foundation

The Gulf of Catalina Gray Whale Preservation & Education Foundation The Gray Whale Foundation educates children on the importance of the Gray Whale by creating an opportunity for students to engage in research.

Our project is unique in two important ways. First, we work with school disctricts to provide a unique wildlife experience to 1600 students per year who would not otherwise experience their natural marine world. We provide each student the opportunity to conduct hands-on marine science and work alongside a real life scientist in the field. We also educate these youth about whales, the relationshi

p between ocean health and human health and behavior, and ways to protect and conserve natural marine resources including National Marine Sanctuaries and marine protected areas (MPAs). Second, we work with scientists, whale watching businesses, and NOAA personnel to provide crucial data on Gray Whale occurrence, distribution, and behavior in and around MPAs throughout the Southern California Bight (SCB). Our research provides information about the ecology of Gray Whales in the context of newly established MPAs -- information that can be used in the decision-making processes associated with MPA design and use.

Our last trip report of the season... This one took on a more personal note for me.

Our last and final trip of the season was with the 3rd class from Wood Canyon Elementary. We took them out aboard the Ocean Adventure right after their peers had braved the morning winds. Fortunately, the conditions had calmed down a bit, and we were still hopeful that we could find a whale(s).

Wood Canyon trip #2 - Check out this dolphin's eye! http://www.graywhalefoundation.org/news/wood-canyon-trip-2-42914/

Our second trip with Wood Canyon (on Tuesday) started off much like our first, with clear skies, and smooth seas… but as you can see from our cover sheet below, things quickly changed.
