Imagine the Audience Naked.
(And other bad advice we receive before a presentation)

Many of us receive advice when we’re nervous immediately before speaking to the public. A lot of it just makes us more nervous.

Below are the common ones I’ve heard of.

1. “Imagine the audience naked.”

This doesn’t calm the threat response. It adds cognitive load and distraction at the exact moment you need clarity. For anxious speakers, it increases self-consciousness, not confidence.

2. “Fake it till you make it.”

Trying to act confident while internally panicking creates tension and incongruence. The body knows you’re pretending. This often amplifies anxiety and drains energy faster.

3. “Focus on yourself and how you’re coming across.”

This is disastrous advice. Self-monitoring increases anxiety, tightens posture, and fragments attention. Confidence improves when focus moves outward, not inward.

4. “Memorize every word.”

Over-memorization makes speakers brittle. Under stress, memory is the first thing to fail. When one line is lost, panic spikes and the whole structure collapses.

5. “You just need more confidence.”

This is not advice. It’s a conclusion. Confidence is an outcome of learning safety and recovery, not something you summon on demand.

6. “Don’t think about your nerves.”

Thought suppression backfires. The brain rebounds harder. You end up thinking about nerves more.

The best advice I can give to calm nerves immediately before a speech or presentation is to take 5 minutes to breathe deeply and slowly into the belly.
This calms the nervous system immediately.
