Two parents take us inside their six-week NICU experience, sharing the messy mix of hope, hurt, and hospital humor that helped them get through each day. Join us in exploringย how early medical trauma shapes infant brain development and bonding, why a caregiverโ€™s mental health is just as critical as oxygen saturation, and how professionals can keep showing up long after the monitors stop beeping ๐Ÿง‘โ€๐Ÿง‘โ€๐Ÿง’

Learning Objectives ๐Ÿ’ก
โ€” Describe how early medical trauma in the NICU can impact infant brain development, stress regulation, and early attachment.
โ€” Explore the emotional and mental health experiences of parents navigating the NICU and transition home, including the unique perspectives of both mothers and fathers.
โ€” Identify ways professionals can support families during and after NICU discharge, including trauma-informed care that considers maternal health, prenatal experiences, and the transition to early parenting.

On World Mental Health Day, we want to shine a spotlight on the importance of Infant Mental Health ๐ŸŒ๐Ÿง ๐Ÿ‘ถ

๐ŸŒฑ Our first emotions, primary relationships, and earliest experiences during infancy plant the seeds for the development of our mental health and wellness in childhood, adolescence, and adulthood! The earlier we lay these foundations for infants and their families, the better the outcomes for the children and families we work with.

๐Ÿ’ค Letโ€™s talk about safe sleep practices for National Safe Sleep Awareness Month!

Per recommendations from the NIH Safe Sleep campaign, infants should sleep on their backs until they are a year old. This practice helps prevent the risks of overheating and breathing expired air (air that has already been breathed out). Additionally, keeping young infants in the same room as caregivers can reduce the risk of SIDS (sudden infant death syndrome), as caregivers can safely monitor and respond to infant sleep cues.

๐Ÿ›๏ธ Sleep surfaces should also be flat, firm, level, and clear of any additional accessories like pillows, plushies, and blankets that could lead to accidental entrapment and suffocation associated with SIDS.

Share these safe sleep recommendations to spread awareness and keep infants and their families informed about best practices! And visit the NIH Safe to Sleep website to learn more๐Ÿ’ก

The HITC Sticking Together campaign is only made possible through our community partners, who help us recognize and celebrate the everyday moments of caregiver-child connection that help strong, secure relationships thrive in our earliest years of life โฃ๏ธ

๐Ÿ’Œ By acknowledging the work caregivers put into these seemingly simple, yet impactful moments of play, musical connection, back-and-forth babbles, and shared storytimes, our partners promote early relational health for families and communities across Texas.

Early relational health has been central to our work for the past 40 years. Help us continue strengthening and growing programs like the HITC Sticking Together campaign by supporting our $40 for 40 fundraiser through the link in our bio ๐ŸŽ

๐ŸŽ“Happy Head Start Awareness Month! These vital programs provide wraparound services for families nationwide and lay the foundation for early childhood learning by tailoring each center to the local community, practicing a holistic approach to health and well-being, and building relationships with caregivers.

Since its founding, Head Start has served over 40 million children and their families, with research showing positive and multi-generational outcomes. The measurable impact of this educational model highlights the importance of supporting children and their families inside and outside of the classroom ๐Ÿ’ก
