Ayanna Patterson didn’t need to visit Storrs to know that the UConn women’s basketball program was where she wants to spend her college career. But finally being able to make the trip out east for first time last week, where she attended First Night, only reinforced to the 6-foot-2 wing from Fort Wayne, Indiana, that she made the right decision when she committed to Geno Auriemma’s squad this past spring.

“Everything that I had heard and everything that I had believed in was there,” Patterson, the No. 4 recruit in the Class of 2022 per ESPN’s HoopGurlz rankings, told The Courant this week.

MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Wisconsin typically relies on experience to carry the Badgers to the NCAA Tournament each season.

Not this year.

The Badgers have one of their youngest teams in two decades after losing six seniors from a team that went 18-13 and reached the second round of the NCAA Tournament.

“Teams aren’t really expecting us to be very touted like we were in years past, but I’m really, really looking forward to playing with this new group of guys,” sophomore guard Johnny Davis said. “We’ve got a lot of talent coming in.”

Wisconsin has played in 21 of the last 22 NCAA Tournaments, and the Badgers’ chance of earning an invitation this season could depend on how soon their young talent matures.

The expectation continues to mount for the UCLA men’s basketball team.

A week after being picked to win the Pac-12 Conference by the media, the Bruins will now enter the 2021-22 season the No. 2-ranked team in the country, according to Monday’s preseason Associated Press Top 25 poll.

It’s the highest AP preseason ranking for the program since being No. 2 prior to the 2007-08 season. The Bruins returned the 2008-09 season ranked No. 4.

The Ohio State basketball team will be coming to a court, television, and streaming device near you sooner than you think. That means there are typically some so-called “secret scrimmages” that take place among the Division I teams.

Gone are the days of the exhibition games between college programs and teams like Athletes in Action. You have to play against another college basketball team and they aren’t typically publicized.

College basketball starts in less than a month. (Opening day is Nov. 9.) So we've still got some time, but you know games will be here before too long. That in mind, I couldn't go another day without handing over our biggest piece of preseason content at CBS Sports: my beloved/unpropitious/mockable/earnest No. 1-358 ranking of every school in men's college hoops.

We do this every year and wouldn't you know it every year I get every team in exactly the right order. Don't even bother going back to previous seasons to fact-check me. Waste of your time.

Esports started as a niche of a niche — hardcore competition in video games. For decades it could only happen in damp warehouses and cigarette-smoke-laden internet cafes. Recently, however, it has been deemed a lucrative investment by superstars from its athletic cousins, including the NBA and WNBA.

Investments made by famous people from across different fields are far from what makes esports the cultural phenomenon that it is, but they don’t hurt. For a number of the entries in this article, their interest in esports came not through a monetary incentive, but from a connection to the medium – either a personal passion or the passion of their children.

The Big 12 has announced its 2021-22 men’s basketball preseason awards and team as voted by the head coaches. Kansas’ Remy Martin was selected Preseason Player of the Year while Texas’ Marcus Carr picked up Newcomer of the Year and Baylor’s Kendall Brown was named Freshman of the Year.

Martin and Carr were joined on the Preseason All-Big 12 Team by Baylor’s Matthew Mayer, Kansas’ Ochai Agbaji and David McCormack, along with Texas Tech’s Terrence Shannon, Jr. Three of the selections were honored on the 2020-21 All-Big 12 teams as McCormick was a second-team pick while Shannon was on the third team and Agbaji was honorable mention.

Martin will play his final season at KU after transferring from Arizona State. He was a three-time All-Pac-12 selection, earning second-team honors as a sophomore and first-team his junior and senior seasons. In 2020-21, Martin led the Pac-12 with 19.1 points per game, including 21.5 ppg in conference play. The 6-0 guard has career totals of 1,754 points, 466 assists, 151 steals and 176 three-point field goals made.

STARKVILLE — Less than a month before the 2021-22 season is set to begin, Mississippi State women’s basketball finds itself with an interim head coach.

Nikki McCray-Penson stepped down from her position to focus on her health, the program announced Tuesday. Associate head coach Doug Novak, who was hired last month, will serve as the interim head coach while the Bulldogs conduct a national search for McCray-Penson’s replacement.

McCray-Penson, a three-time WNBA All-Star and an Olympic gold medalist in 1996 and 2000, had been diagnosed with breast cancer in 2013.

“Over the past several weeks, I have been faced again with health concerns I had hoped were behind me,” McCray-Penson said in a school release. “In light of these developments, I have decided to step away from coaching in order to devote my full time and energy to addressing those issues. Although I look forward to returning to coaching when I am able, I believe this is the best decision for me and my family at this time. I appreciate the support MSU has shown me, and I will be pulling for the team's success this season.”

Alabama is coming up in the basketball world, and those of us that follow it closely have been awaiting good fortune for a long time!

Just a year ago, Alabama won the SEC championship in both the regular season and the SEC Tournament. En route to a Sweet 16 appearance, the Tide recorded the best season of basketball at the Capstone since at least the early 2000’s.

Nate Oats has the Crimson Tide winning on the court, as well as the recruiting trail. This upcoming season Alabama will see five-star guard JD Davison in the fold, and we can expect him to be a huge difference maker for Alabama.

Davison, along with Jahvon Quinerly and Jaden Shackelford will form a deadly perimeter for the Crimson Tide. This group should lead to a lot of points running Nate Oats’ signature offense. Keon Ellis will be a key piece, as well, on the perimeter following the season-ending injury to Texas Tech transfer Nimari Burnett.

The Gonzaga Bulldogs men's basketball team will be without its coach to start the 2021-22 season.

Gonzaga suspended Mark Few in the wake of his driving under the influence citation over Labor Day weekend. Few will miss Saturday's kickoff celebration "Kraziness in the Kennel," two exhibition games and the season opener against Dixie State at home on Nov. 9. The Athletic first reported his upcoming absences, and Few confirmed the news with a statement through Gonzaga athletics.

Few will return to the bench for the Bulldogs' game against the Texas Longhorns on Nov. 13.

"I again offer my sincere apology and I remain committed to learning from this mistake," he said in his statement.
