The National Active and Retired Federal Employees (NARFE) Chapter 1191 held its monthly meeting from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm at the Bella Italia Restaurant in Ennis on Tues., 8 Mar 2022. The guest speaker was Lisa Deese, Director of Development for Meals on Wheels of North Central Texas. The speaker is originally from DeSoto and had previously been Volunteer Coordinator for Dallas Life.
Meals on Wheels of North Central Texas, with main office located at 106 E. Kilpatrick St. in Cleburne, TX, serves Johnson, Ellis and Navarro Counties with 24 staff members. The program serves seniors who suffer from hunger, social isolation, anxiety and depression which have been increased due to covid. The program is described as need based rather than income based. Seniors aged 60 and above who didn't have enough to eat rose froom 2.8 % in 2019 to 4.9 % in 2020, a 75 % increase. One in four adults aged 65 or older reported anxiety or depression during the pandemic. Thirty eight percent of clients are aged 80 or above, 46 % live alone, 16 % are veterans, and 71 % are at or below poverty level
In Fiscal Year 2021,the program served 230,662 meals to 1,437 clients and 14,824 pounds of pet food to companion pets. It costs $9.25 to deliver a meal with 952 meals currently being delivered each day. The program is described as a three legged stool with one leg being the seniors with need, another the volunteers to deliver the hot meals, and funding and contributions. The month of March is being celebrated as March for Meals, recognizing the 50th anniversary of the Older Americans Act, in part with a clay shoot fund raiser on March 25. Thomas Burns, Corsicana YMCA CEO, Speaks to NARFE

The National Active and Retired Federal Employees (NARFE) Chapter 1191 held its monthly meeting on Tuesday, 8 Feb 2022, at the Sirloin Stockade in Corsicana.

The guest speaker was Thomas Burns, CEO of the Corsicana YMCA since 2017 after serving as sports director. Burns is originally from Kerrville, and a graduate of Texas Tech in Sports Managemnt and Sports Medicine. He is married with three children.
The speaker talked about the overall purpose of the YMCA as putting Christianity into practice via the mission objectives of youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility. He noted that the Y is much more than a gym. Activities are provided for boys, girls and adults with sports, water safety, volley ball, basketball, flag football, weight room, adult fitness, large provider of after school programs, and summer camp at Camp Wanica as examples. Baby sitting certification, CPR/First Aid, and Lifeguard Certifica tion are also provided. Also noted were partnerships with the Salvation Army and Hope Center to help those in need. Assistance is welcome in the form of volunteers and monetary assistance as well as clothing, diapers, shoes, and toys etc.
The speaker also discussed some of the history of the YMCA with the Corsicna YMCA being the second organization formed in Texas in 1884. The YMCA was first organized in London in 1844 and in Boston in 1851. The Corsicana YMCA operates under a local board of directors under the overall constitutional requirements of the YMCA USA. The very interesting presentation was followed by a question and answer session.

NARFE Chap 1191 to meet in Ennis on 8 Jun 2021.

The National Active and Retired Federal Employees Association (NARFE), Chapter 1191, will hold its monthly meeting in the Maple Room at the IHOP in Ennis on Tuesday, 8 June 2021, from 11:00 a.m until 1:00 p.m. The guest speaker will be David Casarez, Programs Director for the Ennis Parks and Recreation Dept.

The National Active and Retired Federal Employees Association (NARFE), Chapter 1191, will hold its monthly meeting at the Sirloin Stockade in Corsicana on Tuesday, 11 May 2021, from 11:00 a.m until 1:00 p.m. The Sirloin Stockade is located at 2508 W.7th Ave.(TX Hwy 31) in Corsicana.

The guest speaker for the meeting will be Lydia Bailey with CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates)of Navarro County, a nonprofit organization which recruits, trains and supervises community volunteers to support abused and neglected children and families.
