Domestic violence impacts our communities more than many realize; including our churches.

At ElevateHer International, we believe faith leaders should not have to navigate these challenges alone. That’s why we are hosting a special virtual training for Haitian and Black pastors, and ministry leaders focused on responding to domestic violence with wisdom, compassion, accountability, and trauma-informed care.

This 2-hour webinar will cover:

When we started doing the work of empowering women to heal from trauma, we started noticing a gap: community leaders are needed. Leaders need to understand their power and role in helping communities thrive.

If communities are going to thrive, women need to be well cared for. And if women will be cared for, leaders need to be part of the work.

So we develop our leaders trauma healing cohort for this very purpose. It took us some time to get it right. It’s not perfect but we’re well on our way. The feedback from our participants was 100% satisfactory.

Thank you for all who prayed, gave, facilitated, worked behind the scenes, advised and showed up. You are a part of the movement of healing women to heal the world.

Last weekend, we were invited to a tea party honoring women at Asbury Park Haitian church of God.

My mom was my plus one. This was the first time my mom accompanied me to such an event. I could tell she was happy to go and proud of the work I’m doing at ElevateHer.

I was also wondering how well she would engage the subject I would be discussing with the women: Divine alignment as it relates to relationships, domestic violence and women’s flourishing.

My mom is the typical Haitian woman from her time. Entrepreneur minded, resilient, love her children but for the most part will not fight systems of oppression especially in the church and families. Some may even say they perpetuate those harmful systems.

The women in her day would see injustice against women and sometimes even speak of their unfairness privately but their strategy to deal with them is to not agitate things making matters worst. They’d advise younger women to stay quiet, keep serving, keep praying while they’re being harmed.

I was in for a pleasant surprise, the women in the room, including my mother, were not having it. Those in her generation and younger were freely sharing and giving each other permission to leave when there’s violence. One woman said: “I rather have my daughter alone and single than dead from domestic violence.”

What I believe gave them the freedom to speak against domestic violence was the community of the sisterhood. We can stand and speak boldly when the sisterhood stands with us.

May we be women who are bold and courageous. Speaking against unjust systems. Creating safe spaces for all women to be safe and thrive.

Heal Women. Heal the World.

ElevateHer is on a mission to help women flourish beyond trauma. From the Dallas County Jail to communities in Brazil and Congo, we’ve seen that healing is the foundation for leadership and change.

Now, we’re heading to Malaysia, Kenya, and Haiti. ✈️

Our goal this May is to fully fund these upcoming programs:
    •    Malaysia Retreat: $5,000 needed 
    •    Kenya Leadership Training: $7,500 needed 
    •    Haiti Healing Retreat: $5,000 needed

Last week, we sat with Radio Bonne Nouvelle, a Haitian radio station reaching approximately 5,000 Haitian listeners in the community of Long Branch/Asbury Park New Jersey.

Usually the radio host would have listeners call in to ask questions but because of the nature of the topic, he knew no one would call in and he was right. So we prepared ahead of time questions we knew listeners would ask if they weren’t afraid.

Questions that helped define domestic violence, red flags in relationships, its impact on women, kids and community, why people are afraid to speak up and get out, what makes it hard to leave violent relationships and how leaders, friends and family can support victims.

Needless to say we had a great conversation. We pray these seeds planted will help create safety in the family. Stay tuned for more opportunities to learn and change the system of silence especially when there’s violence.
