The 2017 manifestation of Litehouse Wellness was birthed out of the immense passion spurred by the untimely passing of my best friend and life partner - Baba "Lite" Groden - who lost his brief battle with cancer in October 2015, at the age of 43. That journey left me inspired to enthusiastically share theTotal Wellness message within the African American community, particularly amongst African Ame
rican men, through the use of yoga, meditation, nutritional support, mentoring and preventative health education. It’s been my observation that many African American men, out of necessity no doubt, rather than thriving, have found themselves merely surviving and living their lives either completely disengaged or partially present at best. If you’re in a perpetual state of fight or flight, making wellness choices that best benefit not just yourself, but your children and community is not your top priority. In a recent piece featured on Salon.com, about black men and welllness,Changa Bell, founder of the Black Male Yoga Initiative, was quoted as saying, “We tend to wait until we hit the bottom floor to then pop up and save ourselves.”
Sure, women are credited as the foundation of the family and community, and rightfuly so, but in order for the family and community to move forward, the protection, leadership and support uniquely provided by whole and healthy men is vital to our success. Through Litehouse Wellness and complimentary partner organizations, we will endeavor to heal and thereby transform our communities, one family, one man at a time. Peace and Love...
