Texans suffering from the economic sting caused by COVID-19, can buy a little time when it comes to paying their electric bills, IF they apply.

The Texas COVID-19 Electric Relief Program (CERP), is a bill paying assistance program that is available in parts of Texas that offer customer choice. The program temporarily keeps retail electric providers from disconnecting the service of people who can’t pay their entire electric bill, due to job losses or other related hardships caused by the coronavirus pandemic.

The program is open to people who are receiving or will be receiving unemployment benefits, and qualifying applicants are eligible to remain in the program for up to six months. This includes you or even someone in your household who is applying for or receiving unemployment benefits. Here is the thing, in order to qualify, you must apply.

You might be wondering what exactly is the benefit to the CERP program if you still have to pay each month when your bill is due and payable? Enrolling in the program gives you breathing room during these challenging times. By paying a little bit at a time, you won’t have a large bill staring you in the face at the end of the six-month time period. This means the lights stay on while the children study, church is still available to watch on TV, and the electric bill at the end of the program won’t be so huge.
