CFR/FAR or NOT?

Today's Subject: Seatback Power Charging Ports

Many of our newer aircraft and those coming online in the future are equipped with Seatback charging ports. While these ports are certainly an amazing addition for our passengers, sometimes they present what seems like a possible tripping hazard or an obstruction during critical phases of flight like takeoff and landing. So, it got me wondering... If this an FAR or Not?

Some, who have come from other carriers have brought their procedures and regulations here which sometimes allow the use of these charging cords and then some who have said their former airlines DO NOT allow the use of these charging cables.

I have spoken to my Safety counterparts at Southwest AND our Cabin Safety Inspectors from the FAA in regards to this topic, so let's dispel this once and for all.... FAR or NOT?

The using of charging cables in rows (including the Exit Row) is NOT regulated by the FAA. Southwest also does not have a requirement to remove the cables for takeoff and landing. When performing a walk through and passengers are using the charging ports, we should allow them to do so. Having them remove their charging cords IS NOT a SWA or FAA policy.

For those who have concerns about Safety, extensive testing has been done on the durability of these cords and the ease in which they would become unplugged in the event a passenger tried to pass through it. The effort needed to move through it is nonexistence. The Operational Risk Assessments have found No Significant concern with Safety and therefore, feel free to use these ports when riding and if working, continuing to allow passengers to use these cords as well. This also includes the Over the wing, window exit.

FAR/CFR or Not? The Answer is NOT.

Thanks for reading, tune in next time. Any ideas for FAR or NOT, please send me a Private Message, I'll try and include it in a future update.

DID YOU KNOW? (Safety and Security Reporting Edition)

Did you know that TWU Local 556 and Southwest Airlines have partnered to provide several different methods to report concerns to leadership WITHOUT writing up an Irregularity Report?

When presented with an issue that is safety of flight related, you have the option to file an ASAP (Aviation Safety Action Program) Report, SRS (Safety/Security Reporting System), LINK (Listening, Insight, News and Knowledge) and if the issue involves a crew conflict between Inflight and Flight Operations, you can use Professional Standards in cooperation with the ASAP or SRS.

When you file an Irregularity Report, this report goes to leadership for all those involved and is commonly called "a write up". After speaking with leadership in Safety at SWA, both TWU and SWA encourage members to utilize the ASAP or SRS Reporting Systems to make issues known without "writing a crew member up".

When you file an IR, the ability to use Professional Standards evaporates, however filing an ASAP or SRS allows you to resolve crew issues without the write up. Since COVID, relations between the flight deck/cabin and cabin/cabin had become strained. After meeting with Southwest this week, there is a desire to see people move issues of Safety and Security to the Reporting Systems other than an IR.

When you use an ASAP, you will get a response, the information will be de-identified and your report could help direct change in policy and procedure. When you file an SRS report, the directors and report reviewers will send your questions and concerns to any department needed for their feedback. Both SRS and ASAP will give you a feedback and response. While an IR may not.

Safety and both SWA and TWU encourage members to use the IR system to report irregularities, alcohol related incidents, use of emergency equipment, non safety/security related issues. However, if the incident can lead or cause a reduction in Safety or Security, then please utilize the SRS, ASAP or LINK Reporting options on your IEFB or SWALife.
