Did you know that 1,923 species have been identified at the Charles Ladd Nature Preserve in Duncanville, Texas?

At our August Indian Trail Master Naturalists meeting, we had the one and only Sam Kieschnick, an urban wildlife biologist with Texas Parks and Wildlife serving the east side of the DFW metroplex.

For the past several years, bioblitzes and wildlife surveys at the preserve have documented an incredible variety of plants and animals living within our urban ecosystem. Sam shared some of the fascinating species found there and helped us better understand why places like the Charles Ladd Nature Preserve are so valuable, both for wildlife and for the people who need access to wild spaces in the middle of a growing metroplex.

He also had the kids, and the kids at heart, laughing out loud along the way.

As a reminder, our meetings are open to the public. No membership required, just a love for nature.

Our next meeting will be September 28, when wildlife rehabilitator Heather Federwisch will be presenting. We hope to see you there.

Until then, stay in awe of the nature that surrounds you each day.

Things are blooming at the Nicholas P. Sims Library Educational Pollinator Garden.

Every season brings a different color, a different shape, and new pollinators to discover. Right now, visitors can see black eyed Susans, Turk’s cap, frogfruit, and several other native plants growing throughout the garden.

We were especially excited to see the educational signage installed. The sign helps visitors learn more about the plants in the garden and the important role native plants play in providing food, shelter, and habitat for butterflies, bees, and other pollinators.

Native landscaping does not require sacrificing beauty or curb appeal. These plants bring color and life to the landscape while also being drought tolerant and easier to maintain once established.

We are grateful to the Nicholas P. Sims Library for allowing the Indian Trail Master Naturalists, Keep Waxahachie Beautiful, and our community partners to transform this space into a place where people and pollinators can learn and grow together.

Congratulations to our newest certified Texas Master Naturalist, Gregory Browder, on earning his initial certification.

We would also like to recognize several chapter members who recently reached their annual 40 volunteer hours milestone, as well as Amanda Weatherly for an incredible achievement of 500 lifetime volunteer hours.

Whether you're restoring habitat, educating the public, collecting scientific data, or serving at community events, your dedication makes a real difference. Thank you for helping protect our natural resources and making our community a better place.

As a reminder, we are currently accepting applications for our 2026 Texas Master Naturalist training class. Classes begin in August, and if you've ever wanted to learn more about the natural world around you, this is a fantastic opportunity to feed your inner nature nerd.

As part of the city nature challenge, we are having a black lighting event tonight at the Charles F. Ladd preserve! We will be there from 8pm to 11pm with blacklights. This is a come and go style event, so stop by and look at some bugs with us!

We've been working hard at the Charles F. Ladd nature preserve in Duncanville! Our friends at Duncanville Nature Conservancy came out, with tractor in tow, to help us lay down the new trail! We had a local homeschooling group show up, and everyone was getting their hands dirty. This is the first official trail at the preserve, but it won't be the last! A big thank you to our friends at the Duncanville Parks and Recreation for the extra supplies and mulch!
We still have some tidying to do on this trail, which we will finish on our regular workday.
