This question is from Quora and it reminded me of how lonely and confusing things can feel for many at times. Below is the question that was posed and one of the answers---

I don’t find any reason to live. I don’t have anything I will miss doing in life, and I feel like ending it. Can you give me some good reasons to live that don’t involve family pls?

Living is not as much about family as all are made to believe through the media, churches, and people with good intentions. Living is more about what you as a person bring to life as a whole. Life is a story and we are all characters. The setting changes in a story and the characters do too. It's really a better reflection of what life is. If you can begin to see your role this way you can express more of what you have experienced and what you would like to share with the story of life. There is no right or wrong, there are just experiences. Perhaps if you can look inside at the things you like to do, whether you have access to them or not you will see the expertise that you bring to the story of life. Just as we all have unique fingerprints we all bring something unique to the world. I hope you’ll stay, even the smallest thoughts and deeds compound and make the world a better place.

I feel so alone, is there a cure?

While there is no cure for feelings of isolation and loneliness there are ways to feel more in harmony with the world. Usually, feelings of loneliness come when we’ve forgotten about or become disconnected from nature. I know it seems simple but it really is the truth. Nature is also the one thing that we can trust that cannot be taken away from us. By looking and or sitting outside for just a bit in the day or night you’ll feel how you are a part of the story. The loneliness then begins to fade just enough that a smile comes back and a feeling of belonging returns, and it feels great!

What are some of the pitfalls associated with traditional gifted education programs?

Many traditional gifted education programs are “pull-out” programs that require the students to leave the classroom and re-enter after the supplemental material. This draws a lot of attention to gifted students and can increase their stress and anxiety. Most gifted students already feel somewhat awkward and isolated from their peers. In addition, the “pull out” program is disorienting when returning to class and can set up a problem for teachers grading systems for the student.

Most gifted want to be in class with their peers working on the same assignments. It would be more advantageous to allow the gifted to work side by side on similar materials. In fact, a leveled system that starts with the same classroom assignment and builds would be best.

Gifted students that are uncomfortable in traditional gifted programs tend to underachieve intentionally in an effort to fit in and stay in class.
