"At a fundamental level, this case is about an attempt to strip citizenship from the children of immigrants who have always been citizens of the U.S. ..." ~ Cody Wofsy, ACLU Lawyer

Experts on Native American law say the Elk v. Wilkins ruling has no bearing on whether the children of immigrants without permanent legal status can be denied birthright citizenship.

EXCERPT: "The U.S. government is taking fees from immigrants and U.S. sponsors for services that it has no plans to provide. The government took their money, and now it won’t even adjudicate their applications—in many cases, it refuses even to issue denials. The State Department is actually telling consular officers not to notify future applicants that the government has banned them."

EXCERPT: "Federal Aviation Administration has extended its ban on U.S. commercial flights to Haiti’s capital through Sept. 3 over a risk that criminal gangs could target aircraft.

The FAA halted all flights in November after a Spirit Airlines flight was shot at while landing at Port-au-Prince’s Toussaint Louverture International Airport. A flight attendant received minor injuries and other commercial planes on the ground were hit.

The FAA said in a notice published on Monday that it was extending the ban “due to safety-of-flight risks associated with ongoing instability,” a move that further isolates the capital of the troubled country.

The Federal Aviation Administration has extended its ban on U.S. commercial flights to Haiti’s capital through Sept. 3 because of a risk that gangs could target aircraft.

EXCERPT: "A federal judge used part of a court hearing Thursday to read email and social media death threats she received following her ruling blocking the Trump administration from ending temporary immigration protections for Haitians living in the United States.

U.S. District Judge Ana Reyes in Washington refused to put that decision on hold. But before adjourning, she also took the unusual step of addressing some of the profane criticism and threats it engendered and defending the work of her judicial colleagues, who she said regularly receive such messages these days."

U.S. District Judge Ana Reyes received the threats after her ruling blocking the Trump administration from ending TPS for Haitians while a lawsuit proceeded.

EXCERPT: "Haiti’s Transitional Presidential Council has handed power to US-backed Prime Minister Alix Didier Fils-Aime after almost two years of tumultuous governance marked by rampant gang violence that has left thousands dead.

The transfer of power between the nine-member transitional council and 54-year-old businessman Fils-Aime took place on Saturday under tight security, given Haiti’s unstable political climate.

In late January, several members of the council said they were seeking to remove Fils-Aime, leading the United States to announce visa revocations for four unidentified council members and a cabinet minister.

Days before the council was dissolved, the US deployed a warship and two US coastguard boats to waters near Haiti’s capital, Port-au-Prince, where gangs control 90 percent of the territory."

Move comes after council tried to oust PM Fils-Aime and the US recently deployed warship to waters near Haiti’s capital.
