🤔💭 What does the transition from pediatric to adult care look like? Or rather, what should it look like?

As you might expect, the transition varies across patients (read: there are glaring disparities).

“For me, McDonald’s was a choice, a fad I could easily escape. Though for millions of Americans, the luxury of ‘home food’ is not so prevalent. In fact, the fast food I once considered a treat is a regular meal for them; a trip to McDonald’s is not so much a choice but a necessity.”

- Manahil Gill reports on the racist policies which have caused food deserts and their health consequences, as well as the systemic changes which should be utilized to properly discuss and address this problem.

More About Us

In partnership with local nonprofit organizations, our mission is to provide free surgical care and long-term support services to people from underserved communities who have been denied access to crucial medical procedures through mainstream routes. As a result, we hope to increase awareness about socioeconomic and sociocultural disparities in the healthcare system and construct an empowering narrative around disability. Through speaking out on these issues, we aim to encourage a culture where advocating for community needs leads to healthcare equity.

Speak Out for Surgery (S.O.S) is a student-led organization that was created to address and resolve domestic healthcare disparities. As advocates for those who are overlooked in our healthcare system, members of S.O.S. aim to recognize the medical and personal struggles that patients and their families face. After hearing their stories, our team connects people with the surgical, legal, psychological, and financial resources necessary to remedy issues in their lives that are outside of their control. In addition to working towards patient care on an individual basis, we strive to increase awareness about socioeconomic and sociocultural disparities in the healthcare system. S.O.S. uses information from the interviews to write anecdotal pieces, publish public health statistics, host campus-wide educational events, and coordinate fundraisers. Each of these tasks contributes to our ultimate goal: broadening the discussion about disparities in children’s health across Southern California.
