The Dallas Friday Group's recent arts and culture meeting featured a stellar group of leaders. Conversation and insight ranged from the need for a signature Dallas arts event, the couch as competition, and the impact of changing consumer demands to the idea of now as a creative time of arts convergence in the city. Thanks to our panel for sharing their expertise and vision: Michelle Miller Burns, Ross Perot President and CEO of the Dallas Symphony Orchestra; Kristina Kirkenaer-Hart, Director of Cultural Tourism and the Dallas Music Office at Visit Dallas; and Warren Tranquada, President and CEO of the AT&T Performing Arts Center. We appreciate DFG board member Stacie Adams, CEO of Business Council for the Arts, for moderating the discussion.
Key Takeaways:
· The Dallas arts scene is vibrant and growing - we have everything from grit to fine arts.
· Art is a key driver in economic development.
· Dallas needs a signature arts event to celebrate, grow, and attract global visitors.
· Dallas is experiencing a moment of convergence with the arts. The arts are collaborative, experimental, accessible, and present.
· Legalized gambling in the state represents a potential threat to growth and sustainability of the arts scene in Dallas.
· The couch is the biggest competition for the arts community. Consumers want on-demand, easy to get and receive art, and organizations are evolving to remain relevant.
· Arts organizations are creating holistic experiences to remind people how art makes them feel. They are collaborating and bringing performances into the community; creating shorter format programs; and being present where people are.
· Art helps people understand and see the world around in new ways. It encourages empathy and understanding of our community.
· Dallas Friday Group guests and supporters were challenged by the panel to get off the couch, get a ticket, and take friends and family out to see and experience the arts!
