Our Christmas Wreaths and other products have arrived in Sweetwater. In previous years we have used the proceedings to finance scholarships and other activities within our schools. This year we are also using profits from our sales to buy a marker for one of our local veterans who is interned at Sweetwater Cemetery Veterans Addition. Pasquel Castro did not qualify for a military marker because he was in the National Guard but his unit was never activated into fulltime service.
As Kiwanis we understand that there are rules we cannot change, but we believe he deserves a marker on his grave. As of now we have 1 28" wreath for 50.00, 7 door Swags for 30.00 each, 3 Garlands for 35.00 each, 5 Tall and Snowy Reindeer sets at 25.00 for a set of two and 8 Tabletop Center pieces for 25.00 each.

Two weeks ago the Sweetwater Kiwanis obtained permission from the family of Pasquel Castro to make every effort to secure a military monument and place it on his grave at the Sweetwater Cemetery. Mr. Castro deserves the same monument every other veteran receives with an honorable discharge. For more information please contact me @ 325-333-1955.

Surprise visit. Relaxing in my home today when I had a special visitor. My neighbor two doors down allowed his daughter to come and personally read a poem to me which she had intended to share yesterday at the ceremony to all the veterans at the Middle School but wasn't able to. It takes a lot of courage to speak in front of a lot of people. When she read her poem to me it showed strength and character.

What an amazing program. The middle school never fails to make us (veterans) feel blessed and honored. The band was simply amazing. The choir sang some amazing songs that touched our hearts.
The poems written by the students were very touching. Thank you to the staff for going beyond your normal duties and making us feel welcomed.

The time has come for Sweetwater Kiwanis annual Christmas Wreath fundraiser. This is a special year because this fundraiser will not only help us fund our scholarships it will also fund our new project. Sweetwater Kiwanis is working to beautify the Veterans Cemetery here in Sweetwater. Your purchases will help upgrade the resting place of the men and women who served our country. Our Kiwanis Kid for October is Ray Reyes. Ray was extremely quiet and answered any question with just one word. So we had to ask Mrs. Cullins why she picked Ray as her was and I quote " he is wonderful, capable, highly intelligent, very productive, extremely courteous and a blessing to have in her class". Sadly Mrs. Cullins did not know his social security number but we figure she will before the end of the year.

Had a great time at the National Night Out tonight. We enjoyed visiting with a lot of people we otherwise wouldn't get to see. Our fundraiser starts tomorrow and we are very excited. We have our Kiwanis Kid program at noon at Broadway Baptist Church during noon. Come see us.

On October 2, 2025 we had the opportunity to go before the Cemetery Board to make a proposal. We asked the Board for permission to beautify the new section of our Veterans Cemetery. The Board voted overwhelmingly in our favor of us preparing plans to bring before the City Council. As part of our proposal we shared with the Cemetery Board that we would be asking other civic organizations to join us but we need your help also. Please join us as we strive to make the resting place of our Veterans a place worthy of their sacrifices.

Yesterday was our first Kiwanis Kid celebration for the 2025-2026 school year. His name is Creed Hodnett.
So, our members instantly jumped on the name. Did it originate from a Rocky movie or possibly the rock band Creed. We showed our age. Creed was named after his grandfather who served during WW2.

Had an amazing time at our monthly Kiwanis Kid program last Wednesday. Our student was Maggie May. She showed such poise and grace even though she had to share the spotlight with other members of her class. The Student Council from SIS was there as well as many parents. In addition to them we honored our Senior Scholarship winner Diego and our Sophomore of the Year Cam Soto both of whom had parents in attendance. Lyndell our Lt. Governor finished out the list of guests. It was amazing.

On May 6th Sweetwater Kiwanis presented two scholarships to very deserving students. The winner of our Sophomore of the Year was to Camden
Soto. Our one thousand dollar scholarship was presented to Diego Alvarez. Congratulations to both our winners. You were chosen because of your hard work and dedication of service in our community.
