AVS The American Viola Society promotes and supports viola performance, pedagogy, composition, scholarsh

Our mission is to promote interest in the viola by encouraging performance and recording at the highest artistic level, by the continued study and research of our instrument and its repertoire, and by providing a vehicle for the ongoing development of the fraternal bond among violists.

The American Viola Society announces the 2026-27 AVS Internship Program to provide college students and emerging professionals with the opportunity to contribute to AVS programs while developing their skills under the direct mentorship of a current AVS board member. This program replaces the previous AVS Youth Advisory Council with opportunities to gain hands-on experience in real-world applications and earn internship credentials along the way.

We encourage prospective applicants to review the AVS website to familiarize yourself with our programs and see which ones fit your areas of current expertise or desired growth. The AVS currently has need for interns in specific areas, including:

- AVS Recording Project (press releases, promotion)
- Database Development (Underrepresented Composer Database and Viola Ensembles Database)
- Conference Staffing (AVS Festival volunteers or ASTA/SAA booth staff)
- Communications (content creation, social media moderation, etc)
- Applicants may also propose their own project or area of service, appropriate to their skills and interests.

Applications will be accepted on a rolling basis, beginning September 1, 2026. A limited number of internships will be available each year.

This is an unpaid opportunity, but those who complete projects will receive a certificate of completion from the AVS as well as a one-year digital student AVS membership.

To provide opportunities for our members, the American Viola Society (AVS) announces our 2028 Recording Project! This will be the 6th new full-length recording to be released via the AVS Presents recording label, a vehicle for AVS members to present and produce professional recordings sponsored by the AVS.

For this project, the AVS seeks professionally-recorded submissions of works for viola, including solo or with other instruments as long as the viola is prominently featured. There is no theme for this year. Works by composers from all demographics are encouraged to be submitted; the AVS Recording Project Selection Committee will consider demographics for a well-rounded, diverse program. Priority will be given to pieces that have not been recorded, have few existing professional recordings, or have few high-quality recordings. The call is open to complete works as well as individual movements, and the album will be a compilation of selections.

Applicants must be active members of the AVS at the time of submission and continue their active membership through the release of the album. Priority will be given to applicants who have not previously appeared on an AVS Presents release. Recorded performances that have previously been released or will be released before the AVS album comes out are not eligible.

Announcing the 2026 David Dalton Research Competition Winners
The American Viola Society is pleased to announce the winners of the 2026 David Dalton Research Competition, recognizing outstanding scholarship that contributes to the study, documentation, and understanding of the viola and its community. This year’s competition drew an especially strong and competitive pool of submissions, representing a wide range of subjects and approaches to viola research.
We extend our sincere thanks to this year’s judging committee:*Ames Asbell, Andy Braddock, Marcus Pyle, Alice Sprinkle, and Lanson Wells. Their time, expertise, and thoughtful consideration of this year’s submissions were invaluable to the competition. We are deeply grateful for their service and for their commitment to supporting and advancing viola scholarship.

Announcing the 2026 David Dalton Research Competition Winners

The American Viola Society is pleased to announce the winners of the 2026 David Dalton Research Competition, recognizing outstanding scholarship that contributes to the study, documentation, and understanding of the viola and its community. This year’s competition drew an especially strong and competitive pool of submissions, representing a wide range of subjects and approaches to viola research. We are grateful to all of the scholars who shared their work with the competition and are delighted to recognize two exceptional papers among this year’s entries.

First Prize — Roselynn Hobbs
