That's my brother Jake. He's racing Ironman Florida with me on November 7. His first one too.

Friday we rode 100 miles. Neither of us had ever gone that far. We push each other on days like that, and it's an awesome thing to have someone next to you when you're being a wimp.

Nobody goes the distance on their own. That's the whole idea behind the race, and it's why we're raising money while we do it.

66 days out. 37 unclaimed miles between here and the goal.

$26 covers the run. $112 the bike. $140.60 the whole day.

It splits evenly, half and half. Crux Wilderness Therapy gets veterans through their hardest move, outdoors and on rock walls. Border Animal Mission works to end animal suffering and overpopulation along the Mexico and Texas border. Low cost spay and neuter, vaccinations, fostering, safe relocation. Great friends of mine run it. None of it funds my race.

Go outside.

That first photo is El Capitan. Three thousand feet of granite, and you can sit in the meadow underneath it for an hour and slowly realize how little your bad week actually weighs. The other two are from Red Rocks, outside Las Vegas.

I have never once gone outside carrying something and come home with more of it. Sun, hard effort, being somewhere that makes you feel small. Something in that combination works, and it works better than most of what we try instead.

Climbing is one of my favorite things in the world, and Crux Wilderness Therapy gets veterans and their families out into it. Not a program you sit through. Actual rock, actual mountains, actual days like these. For a lot of the people they work with, coming home from service is its own kind of hard, and a day outside with people who understand it is worth more than it sounds like on paper.

On November 7 I am racing Ironman Florida, 2.4 miles of swimming, 112 on the bike, and then a full marathon, to raise money for Crux and for Border Animal Mission. Every dollar splits evenly between the two. None of it comes to me.

Whatever this week is handing you, go outside. It helps more than it should.

Three generations of my family have worn the uniform. Both of my grandfathers served, and my great-grandfather landed with the 29th Infantry Division on D-Day at Omaha Beach. I am incredibly proud of where I come from.

And then there is my dad. Over 20 years of service, first flying Blackhawk medevacs in the Army, then multiple aircraft in the Air Force, including the C-17. He spent a career flying other people out of danger and getting them home.

The first photo goes back to when my brother and I were kids, our dad in his flight suit. I remember how hard it was every single time he left, and how good it felt every single time he made it home.

The others are from 2014, his last flight in the Air Force. We stood there and watched him fly one last time, and my brother and I got to spray him down when he landed. All I felt was proud of my dad.

Not every veteran gets an easy landing when the service ends. Coming home is its own kind of hard, and that is exactly the work Crux Wilderness Therapy does, helping veterans and their families through that transition with climbing and the outdoors. In climbing, the crux is the hardest move on the route. Crux gets our veterans through theirs.

That is why I am racing Ironman Florida on November 7 for Crux Wilderness Therapy and Border Animal Mission. Every mile is for someone else.

✈️ Wheels up, paws down—they made it! 🐾

Today was a huge team effort from start to finish! It all started yesterday afternoon in Del Rio, where our amazing fosters brought their pups by to get loaded up into the car. Saying goodbye is never easy, but seeing these sweet faces head off to bright futures makes every bit of hard work worth it. ❤️

Ben and Chris then made the long, overnight drive up to Dallas to meet with the Wings of Rescue plane—and we’re thrilled to share that all 13 pups have officially landed safely at our partner adoption rescues!

While at the Dallas meetup, Chris also got an awesome surprise visit from his good friend, Luke! Luke is doing something incredible to support our mission—he’s competing in an upcoming Ironman race and raising funds for BAM along the way! 🏃‍♂️🚴‍♂️🏊‍♂️ We are so blown away by his support.

Please take a moment to check out his fundraising page, Miles for the Mission, leave him some encouragement, and follow along as he trains for this huge goal!

Thank you to our fosters for loving these pups, our drivers for putting in the miles, Wings of Rescue, PAWS Animal Adoption Center Maine, Small Miracles Cat and Dog Rescue, and supporters like Luke. It truly takes a village, and today was a massive success! 🐾✨

I added up last week. 3.7 miles in the pool, 116 on the bike, 18 on my feet. 138 miles.

The race is 140.6. In one day.

That is the part that still gets me. A whole week of getting up at 5, of swimming laps after work, of two hours on a trainer in my apartment watching a screen, and it barely adds up to what November 7 asks for in a single morning to night.

So here is the deal I made. Every one of those 140.6 miles is worth $25 to two causes I care about. Crux Wilderness gets veterans back outside and back to themselves. Border Animal Mission takes care of animals along the Texas Mexico border. The money splits evenly and none of it comes to me.

$26 covers a dollar a mile of the marathon.
$112 covers the bike leg.
$140.60 covers a dollar a mile for the whole thing.

Meet half of why I'm racing.

Border Animal Mission rescues animals along the Texas and Mexico border. Low cost spay and neuter, vaccinations, and safe transport to new homes for animals that would otherwise go without. It is run by Chris and Jesse Halprin, and the work they do down there is incredible.

Second photo is me and Chris. We have been friends for about 17 years. I have watched him go from that kid to an Air Force pilot to building something that saves animals nobody else is showing up for.

Every dollar I raise is split 50/50 between Border Animal Mission and Crux Wilderness. 140.6 miles for both of them, on November 7.
