Matthew 28

The day has come, and the Lord has completed His work. He has been raised from the grave and rebuilt the promised temple. No, it was not the one built with stones and bricks, but He Himself was raised. Jesus is alive. How do we know?

The soldiers were so terrified about what had happened under the watch that they turned into dead men. All manner of thinking was beyond them, and their testimony continues to this day. The very enemy of Jesus was now paying off the paupers of the evil one to keep quiet and hope the testimony of God diminishes like so many other times has happened in other religious insurrections of the day.

We also know that the Lord is resurrected because of the testimonies of the people. First the women, and now millions of people later, we have first hand stories of what had happened. His friends carried on the witness that they had had so that the whole world may know that Christ is Lord!

We also know that Jesus was raised because of the testimony of His enemies. There are so many other documents that point to the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus that we might be able to retell everything that had happened from beginning to end, without the Bible.

The stories are true! Yet we, like the women, like Thomas, and so many others before us are not able to believe that Jesus was real without seeing first. We can’t know unless we put our hands in the holes of Jesus’ nail scarred hands. But we do know and the Holy Spirit is the one who delivered the message. It’s the testimony from God that we know and believe. It’s not our knowledge or experiences about God that leads to salvation, but the resurrection and the power we are now equipped with that we know Jesus is alive! So now, go, let us make disciples.

Exodus 22

Worshipping gods other than the Lord and witchcraft were treated much the same. Based on limited understanding, there was a wide range of evil worship where people would sacrifice to other gods, up to and including child/infant sacrifice. Not only was this an evil perversion against people, but it also flew in the face of the Lord. He considered this idolatry, and they were sacrificing something He created.

It’s no wonder that when God referred to the punishment for this, the person wasn’t just killed, he was to be “utterly destroyed”. Maybe it’s just colorful language at an opportune time, but the emphasis here seems to be very fitting with God’s character. To sin against God and man was not something that would carry a light sentence.

So how does this apply to today? While traditional witchcraft in America is not widespread, the serving up of sacrifices for better lives is definitely on the upswing. There are so many reasons that people will harm themselves as well as others in the name of success, pleasure, and even convenience. Abortion is one of the most sought-after ways to take care of a temporary inconvenience. We don’t have the time, money, or maturity to take care of the baby. While that might seem like a legit reason, it’s not. God holds these things in high regard and brings judgment on them. We also see women harming their bodies to prevent pregnancies so that they can compete on a track or field, as well as in the marketplace. To them and their advocates, having a career is more important, leading to a “better life,” but sadly misses the blessing of the Lord and incurs His fury.

Exodus 21

So we’ve received the Ten Commandments, the grand gift the Lord gave to Moses and the people of Israel. The goal of these statements was to give people an outline and boundaries for living righteously before the Lord and to show them the shortcomings of their humanity. Apart from God, man was weak and unable to hold any of these things perfectly, so our entire being was dependent on God.

Now, we start to unpack some of these things for the people. What does it look like? How do they play out in real life? The Lord gives the people real-life scenarios that define and interpret the commandments, so they will know for certain whether a choice is good or bad. Was every single part of life defined in these? No, that would be impossible, which we understand from Jesus and the interpretation He gives to the religious elders of His time to be a thing of the heart, and not just the hands. Jesus expands and interprets the law as any righteous judge would, revealing its full intent to bless one another and to bring honor and glory to God. The Law doesn’t change or go away, but His teaching and life-giving sacrifice illuminate our understanding.

We now know without a doubt that our lives are imperfect and weak. We know the difference between right and wrong, but our flesh is incapable of staying away; in fact, it’s more likely to gravitate towards unholy things. Pray to the Lord that your heart and your actions would align closely with what God is revealing to you in His word. Allow it to light your path and show you the heart that God has for His creation. After all, we are one of them, and who are we to negatively influence His most special part of creation, the part made after His likeness?

Matthew 27

During the trial of Jesus, Pilate spends most of his time trying to weasel out of the responsibility of putting Jesus to death. Though he symbolically washes his hands of the matter, the Lord doesn’t care and sees through the pageantry.

There is a phrase repeated in this chapter. “IT is your responsibility”. The religious leaders said this to both Judas and Pilate. No one wants to stake a claim for the crucifying of Jesus, but in the end, they are all held responsible. God sees the motives and heart of the whole thing and knows it must happen this way. It’s sad but true!

Our sins can haunt us for a lifetime, or they can be forgiven. I am reluctant to remember what Jesus endures on my behalf each time I know I missed again. But Jesus didn’t do this to make us feel bad, but to draw our hearts and lives to Him to be put on the cross with Him, claiming death to our fleshly desires and life in His righteousness. Praise the Lord for what He did. It wasn’t just the physical pain of a public, gruesome death but also the separation He endures from the Father. We will never know the latter because we have life in Christ!

Exodus 20

The Ten Commandments are some of the most thought of bits of scripture in all of mankind. Right next to John 3:16, we understand these statements of virtue and right living before the Lord as if they were written on our hearts. In fact, the Holy Spirit testifies to these to keep us walking in the righteousness of God.

Just as God is calling His people to be holy before Him, we are to keep these things before us as well. We are not called to strict adherence to them, no, in fact, our commandments are all those other things that stem from these and encourage us to live righteously before God. The examples given in some of these are not limitations; they are there to help us see what it means to covet, lust, or steal. Jesus calls us to higher standards. It isn’t just what we do in our flesh, but what we also do with our minds and hearts. If we covet a neighbor’s car or steal it outright, it is the same thing. The Lord calls us to put these things behind us because we are dead to them.

Having lived as long as I have, living my life now as if I were dead to these sins is a constant battle. I get up each day thankful for a breath and a heartbeat, and at the same time asking God to forgive me for making gods other than him and coveting things that aren’t mine. It's things like an easy life, an open checkbook, and the ability to go to the coffeeshop for a snack that aren’t mine to have. They are things I desire and must put behind me. I challenge you to do the same thing. Seek God and His Kingdom and put the things that make our hearts go flippity-flop behind you.

Exodus 19

The Lord continues His plans with the people and once again refreshes the promise He made with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. He calls them His people and says that He is their God. He brought them out of the land of Egypt only so He could have this special relationship with them.

They will be like priests on earth who mediate God’s promise and blessing to the rest of humanity. This relationship is still intact today and blessed by the Lord, regardless of how foul people may run aground. He blesses not because of their or our great faithfulness, but because of His initial promise and His faithfulness. He keeps His promises without contingency.

Moses and the people are set apart from God because just like any other person, they are unholy and He is holy. God tells them to prepare for their meeting with Him on Mount Sinai, and they do all they are instructed. They even keep from their wives to remain as holy as possible. But because holiness is not a gray area, it’s black and white, they cannot approach the mountain on their own behalf. Holiness is not measured on a gauge; it is measured by pass/fail standards, and we always fail without Jesus. God sets apart space for Moses and Aaron to approach, and the people are to remain far from the mountain so they don’t get zapped.

Let’s continue thinking about this idea of holiness today. You were made dead to sin and alive to Christ because of God’s holiness and His standards. While we may be terrible at keeping promises, He is faithful and will see your holiness bestowed on you. Keep pressing on and pressing in for the Lord loves us more than all of creation.

Matthew 26

There are many women mentioned in the Bible, typically in small but mighty roles. Here in the Gospel of Matthew, we get to see one such character, who remains nameless but will be remembered for the rest of time because of the act she committed.

Women, being low on the totem pole of society in Israel, were not really allowed to walk into a room full of men. That was this woman’s first “mistake”. Second, she took a very expensive jar of oil and dumped it all over Jesus. Outside of context, this would probably seem very peculiar and a waste, as the disciples all state. But she did it anyway. Then we have the lesson one last time, and this is where the plot thickens.

This woman was anointing the great I Am who had come in the form of a man to bless and release the captives of Israel. She was there in the service of the Lord of Hosts, the creator of all humanity. It doesn’t state whether she knows what she was doing in its entirety, but she pours that oil all over Jesus and prepares Him for the burial that He had been telling His thickheaded (hard heart) disciples. She did what no one else would do and blessed the master.

I don’t think there’s a great or tangible lesson to learn here, but we must take note of what was being done. And also, this sets off the firestorm that had been brewing in Judas’s heart for a long time. He was shunned for his response here, too, which was the final straw. He leaves the room to offer his soul to the devil and deliver Jesus over to harm. I wouldn’t advocate for his job, but it needed to happen so that we could be set free.

Exodus 18

Moses has been through a lot in the past few years since he left his in-laws with his wife. The Lord has shown himself faithful to all that the Israelites needed, and Moses recounts this for his extended family.

I love how this works out because people who were disconnected from the whole situation were able to hear how the Lord worked in this huge scenario and how that strengthened their faith in him, too! The Lord had been busy, and it was good for Moses to recite that for his in-laws because they don’t know a lot about Him, and it gives them a chance to glorify Him and praise Him.

So much of what the Lord does in our lives should be shared all the same. You never know how something as simple as sharing God’s gifting with others can change the outcome and destination of someone’s life. The Lord is super active in all of His creation, and it is amazing how gracious He is to us. We sometimes make witnessing a lot more difficult than it needs to be, I think. We need to simplify His message to how He’s blessed us, and that will open the door to more and greater conversations. Soon, maybe, we’ll see outcomes as we saw with Moses’ relatives.

Exodus 17

Is the Lord your banner? Is He the one who gives you strength in your times of trouble? Enemies attack, and troubles arise because that is the way of the world. Look at what is happening in the Middle East right now. There are great attacks that are leading people to investigate this “whole Bible thing,” which is awesome.

But really, the battles and wars that we wage, the ultimate one that leads to our protection and rescue from trouble, are all waged by the Lord. We lift our banner high, and the Lord fights on our behalf. The Israelites are constantly bickering against Moses and the Lord. So God decides to show special provision for His people once again. He knows ahead of time that one more sign won’t be enough, but pushes this along, keeping them without excuse to not know the Lord.

Similarly, the Lord has worked in our lives and those of our friends and family so that we can fully know His heart and actions. He shows up in some of the most troubling situations so that we will know Him. There are instances of this in the Bible, and we can see it again in real life in living color. We can trust Him because of what He has already done in lives in the present.

Matthew 25

A lot is said in the Bible about the end times and the return of Christ. This chapter alludes to the giftings people can receive as they fulfill the law and the prophets when the time is right.

One of the most faithful things that Jesus seems to want people to do is to look after those who are less fortunate. Love those who are in need, the poor, the widows, and the children. Where there is weakness in stature and where those who are not significant in society are, Jesus wants our attention. Notice that He didn’t spend much time in synagogues or in secret meetings with top-level religious leaders. Still, He did spend time at dinners with tax collectors, who were considered among the lowest in society. I am sure people would prefer to be a tax collector than a servant, but still, nothing glorious.

I want you to think for a minute about why His focus was so strong here. It’s again, one of those things that flies in the face of “normal”. How many times are people, with no name or fame, on the news because they helped a needy neighbor or, gasp, enemy? It’s not often, and in fact, it rarely receives praise. It’s these boots on the ground, getting your hands a little dirty without the shouts of praise, that will one day land you some of the most prized rewards in heaven. Where you store your treasure, there your heart will be also.

Exodus 16

The Israelites had surely seen the hand of the Lord act on their behalf and had every reason to trust Him. They had firsthand knowledge about what He could do to protect them, and in this chapter, to secure even more faith, they were given food as a provision. Sustenance in the form of manna was given to feed their hungry bellies.

So, in the Lord’s provision, it is also stated that this is a way to test the people. He wanted to see whether they could follow a few simple instructions. First, gather enough for each person in your family, and only that much. The proper measure was an omer, and when they did so, it was the perfect amount. Second, don’t keep any of it overnight, or it’ll rot. And finally, on the sixth day, gather twice as much so you have enough for the seventh day also. That way, they could eat leftovers on one day. That day would become a stumbling block and a point of tension for generations to come, as we see in the trials Jesus faces in the synagogues. The Sabbath was to be kept perpetually by each person.

What was the point of the Sabbath? To rest; it was meant as a day of rest. Don’t go out and do a bunch of stuff, but keep it for the Lord. It became a sticking point because the leaders wanted everyone to become perfect in three days and not do anything! (Thinking of the children’s book “How to be Perfect in Three Days”) Don’t sit, don’t stand, don’t move. Yeah, incredibly impossible. Who among you wouldn’t go rescue a “sheep”? It was a matter of the heart. That is all. Keep holy to the Lord what is His.

Exodus 15

Who is like the Lord? Mighty and strong, wonderful, glorious, working wonders. This is the Lord that the Israelites came to know when He rescued them from the impending danger of the Egyptians. They had been enslaved to them for hundreds of years. Now they are free, not because they chose to be, but because the Lord called them out of Egypt, moved them by His mighty hand, and graciously placed them on the other side of the waters, only to show His holiness and judge the Egyptians one last time because of them. In fact, the foolish people wanted to run BACK to Egypt because life there seemed easier. Fools! Trust the Lord!

Chariots, horse riders, kings, and princes were all lost that day. Not a single person was left standing for the Egyptians. It was truly a day that the Israelites could sing for joy and worship the Lord in truth. Moses and his people were victorious, not because of their great war strategies, but only because of the Lord.

Notice that the people didn’t prepare their lives in such a way as to be saved by God. No, they were all but righteous and deserving. But the Lord, because of His promise to Abraham, contingent on NOTHING, kept His promise to them and brought them out to make them holy and to be their God. There is no God like ours. None that saves us inspite of the lack of gifting towards them. The Lord is mighty and strong, and He truly loves us! Praise Him today because of the works He is doing in and through you today!
