We are a Different Breed Animal Rescue, a 501c3 organization rescuing dogs from the DFW area 'kill' shelters, taking dogs from puppy mill raids & accepting breeder releases. ***Please see recent update***
Sapphire's irresponsible owners dumped her and her 9 babies in a high kill shelter. Hunt County No Kill rescue and ADB networked her on Facebook and via calls, texts and emails. Neither rescue h
ad room for her. HCNK is foster based and did not have a foster available. ADB has only 2 climate controlled quarantine areas. One was full with a mama with 12 babies. The other was full with a large group recently pulled from the shelter. No one stepped up for Sapphire despite their best efforts. The ACO granted the desperate requests for more time and held onto Sapphire for 2 1/2 weeks. During that third week, the puppies got sick and 3 died. The others were deathly ill. Now the rescues were left with the impossible choice of either leaving everybody to die in the shelter or rescuing at least the pups and rush them to the vet. One more died at the vet. The others required around the clock syringe feeding for 5 days until they started eating again. They were so sick the vet wanted blood transfusions. They received strong antibiotics and blood building supplements.
2 days after the pups were rushed to the vet, HCNK rescue found a place for Sapphire but she was already put down. The vet bill was $1524 and the remaining $399 for the pup which stayed at the hospital the longest was waived as the hospital adopted it. At no point did we abandon Sapphire; HCNK and ADB networked but nobody stepped up. The various other rescues pulling from Commerce did not take her either. Sadly, due to all the hysteria surrounding Sapphire, the ACO will go back to the 24-72 hr euthanasia schedule and will never hold onto a dog for several weeks again. ADB did NOT pull the pups for a "quick profit" as is alleged in this poster. ADB pulled the pups to save them and give them the medical care they needed. A Different Breed Animal Rescue was established in 2004 to help save the lives of homeless dogs and cats in the Dallas area through adoption and education on the importance of spaying and neutering. We have a diverse staff of volunteers who share one common belief. . .that all animals deserve a chance to lead a long, happy life in a safe and loving home. Our focus is on rescuing animals from local shelters and the streets of Dallas and giving them the time that they need to find their forever family. Every year, approximately 200,000 animals are euthanized in the DFW Metroplex. . .that means that by the time you finish reading this page, another animal may have lost their chance. We believe that these unnecessary deaths can be reduced or even eliminated altogether. A Different Breed began as a foster based organization with our adoptable pets being kept in temporary foster homes until they could be permanently placed. We provide the food, medical care (including vaccines and spay/neuter),housing,and the love and attention that so many animals need and deserve. Over the last 6 years,we have expanded so much that we are now leasing a 12 acre property where the majority of our animals are housed. We are so proud of the growth that we have seen over the years (we adopted over 60 dogs in the months of November and December 2009 alone!)
