Next Steps The Colony

Next Steps The Colony Next Steps is the only local crisis drop-in center in The Colony.

Next Steps The Colony exists to restore lives through safe, stable housing and intentional support, helping individuals in life recovery rebuild with purpose, stability, and lasting hope When our neighbors are in trouble, they can come to us and we help them get them back on track. Our case managers are experts at quickly assessing an individual’s situation and creating an individualized care plan

to address the root cause issues that led to crisis. From there, we direct, mentor, advocate, coach, teach, motivate and encourage our neighbors to take the next steps on their path to recovery.

Recently our Mission TC team & volunteers had the privilege of helping a local family replace their broken front door with a brand‑new door and screen door. This brought safety, comfort, and peace of mind back into their home.

Moments like this remind us why community matters — when we show up for one another, real change happens. Grateful for every hand, every heart, and every person who makes this work possible!!

We remember and honor those who gave the ultimate sacrifice of their life for our country and freedom.🙏

There are moments in this work that remind us exactly why Independence House exists.

This week, we celebrated our very first graduate from the men’s house. ❤️

When he first came to us, he was incredibly sick. Detox became life or death, and he ended up in the ICU fighting for his future. Today, he’s living proof that recovery is possible when someone has a safe place to land and people willing to walk beside them.

Now he’s stepped down into IOP, is back to working, showing up for service work, and helping encourage the other men still living in the house. Watching him go from surviving…to leading…has been something special.

Recovery is simple, but there is nothing easy about it. The men in our houses fight hard every single day for the lives they’re rebuilding. And today, we celebrate one man who chose to keep going.

We are so proud of you. Keep taking your next steps. 💙

In Scripture, Jesus took what people had—just a few loaves and fishes—and turned it into more than enough. We believe this same miracle can happen today when someone donates even a small amount via Walmart or Home Depot gift card or sends something from our Amazon Wish List. $5 can multiply to $500 or even $5000 when our community comes together.

One card buys cleaning supplies.
Another buys tools for a repair.
Another fills a pantry.
And together, they become abundance for our sober living homes and the families we support.

To be part of this modern‑day multiplication for our ongoing needs, please visit https://nextstepstc.org/donate/

While lots have been going on with our sober living program, Mission TC has had plenty going on as well! Recent projects to help our community neighbors include replacing and repairing a gate and fence, fixing a ramp and taking care of bathroom tiling. A huge thank you to all of our volunteer helpers along with those who donate to our mission to help make these projects happen!💚💛💙💜

Our residents know what it feels like to keep ending up in the same place. We’re so grateful when they choose to live with us and begin walking a different, safer path—one step at a time.

Autobiography in Five Short Chapters
by Portia Nelson

--------------------------------------------------

Chapter 1
I walk down the street.
There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.
I fall in.
I am lost… I am helpless.
It isn’t my fault.
It takes forever to find a way out.

--------------------------------------------------

Chapter 2
I walk down the same street.
There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.
I pretend I don’t see it.
I fall in again.
I can’t believe I am in the same place.
But it isn’t my fault.
It still takes a long time to get out.

--------------------------------------------------

Chapter 3
I walk down the same street.
There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.
I see it is there.
I still fall in… it’s a habit.
My eyes are open.
I know where I am.
It is my fault.
I get out immediately.

--------------------------------------------------

Chapter 4
I walk down the same street.
There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.
I walk around it.

--------------------------------------------------

Chapter 5
I walk down another street.

Over the last few days, I’ve shared a story that started with a simple yes…

A yes to something we weren’t fully prepared for.
A yes that turned into doors opening faster than we could have planned.
A yes that became a place for real people—people walking through life-or-death moments—to land.

And while we were saying yes to opening doors…

They were saying yes to recovery.
Yes to structure.
Yes to accountability.
Yes to a completely different life.

That kind of yes is brave.

But here’s the part I want you to understand…

None of this happens by accident.

It happens because there are people who quietly, consistently say yes behind the scenes.

Generous community support is what makes this possible.

It’s what allows us to move when opportunities come quickly.
It’s what makes sure a bed is ready before we know who will need it.
It’s what turns moments like the one we shared this week into real, lasting change.

We said yes to the house. They’re saying yes to a new life.

Will you say yes alongside us? You can join the cause by giving a gift here, either one time or on a recurring basis: https://missionledger.fund/give?org=NEXT11

God is moving, and we would love for you to be a part of that.

I keep coming back to this…

We’re not the only ones being asked to say yes.

Every single person who walks through our doors is being asked to say yes too.

Yes to recovery.
Yes to structure.
Yes to accountability.
Yes to trusting people they just met… and a process they don’t fully understand yet.

That kind of yes is brave.

Recovery may be simple… but living it out every single day takes everything they have.

It’s one thing for us to say yes to opening a house.
It’s another thing entirely to walk through that door and choose a completely different life.

So while we’re saying yes to opening doors…

They’re saying yes to walking through them.

And that’s where real life change begins.

Tomorrow, I’ll share how you can be part of stories like this.
