Friends of LLELA is committed to connecting our community partners, especially when they're getting youth involved in the environment!

Our friends from TWU will be hosting Slingshot Spark, an event to introduce, celebrate, and support teens who enter the National Geographic Slingshot Challenge: https://www.nationalgeographic.org/explore/programs/slingshot

Located along the Cottonwood Trails, the viewing blind provides a place where visitors can slow down, take in the scenery, and search the pond for waterfowl and other critters that call this special place home. Your donation will help breathe new life into this favorite wildlife viewing destination and ensure it can be enjoyed for years to come.

Have you made a donation to Friends of LLELA's 2026 North Texas Giving Day project yet?

Here's some motivation: in just a small area around the Beaver Pond Viewing Blind, 150 iNaturalist.org participants have made over 2600 observations of 331 different species. The viewing blind is an important place for visitors to slow down, take in the scenery, and search the pond for waterfowl and other critters that call this special place home.

This year's NTGD donations will help breathe new life into this favorite wildlife viewing destination and ensure it can be enjoyed for years to come.

Thanks to Blake Alldredge, the Water Conservation Manager for the Upper Trinity Regional Water District, for his fascinating talk at last Saturday's . Blake shared information about where our water comes from before entering our homes and how UTRWD and other water management systems in DFW are working to insure the future of our water supply.

Our attendees also learned about how UTRWD is working with homeowners to help with water conservation and money-wise tips. Those measures can be found at https://utrwd.com/saving-water/save-outdoors/water-less-yall/ We can all do our part to help!

Congrats to Natural Pathways as they being their fourth year of engaging area high school and college students in service learning opportunities at LLELA!

These students have put in over 1100 service hours, advancing the LLELA mission while developing their own relationships with the land.

With their strong program co-leads, Natural Pathways is ready to welcome even more student volunteers this semester, giving them hands-on experience in all aspects of ecological restoration --everything from nursery work and invasives removal to a variety of citizen science initiatives.

On Saturday, September 12, Natural Pathways is hosting an Educator Open House in the classroom at LLELA from 9am to 10am.

If you know a high school or college educator who might be interested in learning more and promoting this opportunity to their students, please tag them. They can register for this free event by emailing [email protected].

BITTERN MARSH IS OPEN! 🌿

We know many of you have been waiting for this one. The Bittern Marsh Trail is officially OPEN again!

Our team has been working hard all summer to make sure the trail is safe for both you and the landscape, and we are so excited to welcome you back to one of LLELA’s most beloved trails.

And if Bittern Marsh is on your must-hike list, now is the time to visit! This is a limited-time reopening while work gets underway for the next phase of improvements in the area. We’ll share more details when we have a confirmed timeline for the next closure.

So get it while it’s hot- literally. 😎 If you’re heading out, bring plenty of water, wear lightweight clothing, and plan your hike outside of peak heat hours whenever possible.

We’ll see you out on the marsh!

Friends of LLELA welcomed LISD 7th grade teachers with bagels and coffee this past Saturday for their LLELA 7th Grade Field Experience training. Hosting this annual breakfast is one of the many ways we collaborate with our partners at LISD and LISDOLA.

What is the 7th Grade Field Experience?
Each year every 7th grader in LISD spends a day outdoors on property to:
* walk the Bittern Marsh Trail and learn about wetlands ecosystems;
* participate in the Game Manager for a Day exercise, building on classroom teaching to assess the quality of a partially restored area as habitat for Northern Bobwhite quail; and
* plant native species in one of LLELA’s restoration units while learning about the importance of ecological restoration and getting some hands-on experience.

Each year these students put out between 6,000 and 7,000 plants that are grown in the LLELA nursery.

Many of the students have never been to LLELA or spent much time in natural settings, and we hope that this program will lead some students to our Natural Pathways high school service learning program and from there to consider careers in conservation!

Coming up next month, we’re taking a closer look at
one of North Texas’ most fascinating reptiles: box
turtles!

Join us to learn about the important niche box turtles
fill in our ecosystem and get an inside look at LLELA’s
Box Turtle Head Start Project, which helps prepare
turtles for their return to the wild.

Best of all, you’ll have the chance to meet the turtles
up close and see firsthand how they’re cared for along
the way.
