A very special mitzvah was done today.

Two weeks ago, I received a call letting me know that Ron Vardi, a Jewish man living in Anna, Texas, had passed away. Ron had no immediate family, and there was a real concern that he would not receive a proper Jewish burial.

Baruch Hashem, our broader Jewish community came together. The Collin County Medical Examiner's Office was respectful and willing to work with us so that Ron could receive a proper Jewish burial. JFS of Dallas and Dallas Jewish Funerals stepped in to take care of all the arrangements, and Congregation Shearith Israel generously donated a plot in their cemetery so that Ron could be laid to rest with dignity in a Jewish cemetery.

Yesterday at our Shabbos kiddush, I shared Ron's story and mentioned that we were looking for a minyan for the funeral. I was so inspired by the response of several individuals in our community wanting to help.

Today, members of our community came out to show their support, honor Ron, and make sure Kaddish was said for him.

There is no greater kindness than one done for someone who can never repay it. Thank you to everyone who answered the call, and to the Collin County Medical Examiner's Office, Jewish Family Service, Dallas, Houston and Dallas Jewish Funerals and Congregation Shearith Israel for their care and generosity.

May Ron's neshama have an Aliyah.

October 7th awakens in each of us strong memories and deep feelings that range from pain and sadness to frustration with Israel’s and the Jewish people’s isolation in the world today, as well as love for our brothers and sisters in Israel and admiration for the heroism of so many over these past three years. Today is a day to pause, reflect, remember, and take action:

• To pause, remember, and reflect on those who were brutally murdered on this day, and to honor the heroic soldiers and other citizens of Israel who risked their lives and continue to risk their lives to protect our brothers and sisters.
• To act because the Rebbe taught us that in times of darkness, action is our unique calling card: not to be intimidated, not to fall into despair, but to strengthen ourselves and look toward a brighter future.
Today, as we mark this anniversary, I invite you to engage in the timeless and Torah-true practices of Torah, Tefila, and Tzedaka:

• Torah: Set aside a few minutes today to learn Torah. Even a short teaching brings light into the darkness.
• Tefila, or prayer: Take a moment and recite a Psalm for the souls of those who have been returned to their Maker as a result of the horrific events of October 7th.
• Tzedaka: Give to a worthy charity that supports our brothers and sisters in Israel. Here is a suggestion: www.colelchabad.org

May these days be transformed into days of light and celebration, with the ultimate light and celebration: the coming of Mashiach, when we will be reunited with our loved ones and all of those who have sacrificed themselves over the generations for the sake of Hashem and the Jewish people.
