A food bag can contain much more than food.

This week, our Olón Foodbank families received their regular pantry staples along with some very welcome additions: ground beef, eggs, shrimp, and cookies, made possible through our partnership with Diakonía in Guayaquil.

For families managing limited budgets, access to foods such as meat, seafood, and eggs can make an important difference. Foodbanks help fill gaps when household income has to cover housing, utilities, transportation, medicine, school expenses, and everything else life brings. Around the world, foodbanks serve this same role: connecting available food with people who can put it to good use.

And sometimes there is room for a little joy, too. This week, that came in the form of cookies.

Thank you to Diakonía, our volunteers, donors, and everyone who helps keep the Olón Foodbank moving from one distribution to the next.

Busy as bees at the Olón Foodbank this week!

Our team was hard at work preparing bags of staple foods for distribution yesterday, and we were especially grateful to receive a generous donation of fresh eggs. We want to send a sincere thank-you for helping us add something extra to this week’s food.

There’s even more good news: Barb’s recent fundraiser raised an amazing $450 for the Foodbank. A huge success, and a wonderful boost for our upcoming distributions.

And today, three of our volunteers are in Guayaquil fulfilling our monthly volunteer commitment with the Diakonía Foodbank/food distribution center.

It’s a busy week of service for the team!

A beautiful afternoon, perfect weather, a generous community, and a wonderful cause.

We are so grateful to everyone who supported today’s Foodbank fundraiser. Whether you baked, created something for the sale, volunteered your time, stopped by to shop, or simply helped spread the word, you contributed to a very special afternoon.

A very special thank you goes to Barb, who organized and hosted the event and created many of the items offered for sale. Her time, creativity, and tremendous effort made the afternoon possible.

We are also grateful to our volunteers Eileen, Carrie, and Diane for their support, and to all of the bakers who contributed such a wonderful selection of homemade treats.

And thank you to Horizon’s Restaurant for being such a gracious host and providing the perfect setting for the event.

For those who couldn’t join us, the video gives a little glimpse into the afternoon.

Most of all, thank you to everyone who came out and supported the event. Your generosity helps us continue providing food assistance to families in our community.

A Foodbank distribution starts long before the first bag is handed to a family.

There is food to organize, bulk goods to divide into family-sized portions, bags to prepare, and plenty of teamwork to make sure everything is ready when our beneficiaries arrive.

These photos capture just a few moments from this week’s distribution—from the preparation behind the scenes to the people at the heart of why we do this work---families with groceries and hope.

We are grateful to our volunteers for giving their time, energy, and care to help provide reliable food support for families in our community.

A wave from the Olón FoodBank family!

Yesterday’s food distribution began with one of our favorite moments: beneficiaries and volunteers gathering together in front of the FoodBank office to smile and wave for the camera.

Our volunteers also received new team shirts prior to the distribution. The shirts help identify the team, but it is their compassion, hard work and welcoming spirit that truly make them recognizable.

Community food banks play a vital role in helping families remain nourished during periods of hardship. Around the world, approximately 2.3 billion people experienced moderate or severe food insecurity in 2024, while an estimated 673 million people faced hunger.

FoodBanks help turn those enormous statistics into local action. In 2024, members of The Global FoodBanking Network reached approximately 38 million people across 46 countries and distributed the equivalent of about 2.1 billion meals.

Here in Olón, Spirit of Wellness is proud to sponsor a FoodBank built on more than food. It is built on neighbors helping neighbors, volunteers serving with dignity and a community facing challenges together.

Thank you to our volunteers, supporters and every family that is part of the Olón FoodBank community.

This week, with the World Cup games on many people’s minds, there has been a lot of talk about teamwork, perseverance, and pride.

At the Olón Foodbank, we see those same values in action in a quiet and practical way.

Our beneficiaries wait patiently while volunteers sort, organize, and prepare the food bags.

Then, one by one, families and individuals receive support to take home. The photos may look simple — people waiting, a full bag being handed over — but each moment represents care, dignity, and community.

Foodbank is not only about what is inside the bags. It is about showing our neighbors that they are seen, remembered, and supported.

Thank you to our volunteers, donors, and community partners who make each distribution possible. Together, we help carry the weight a little farther.

Friday’s food distribution was a true team effort, beginning with food provided through Diakonía and a long day of transporting, organizing, packing, and delivering groceries to our beneficiaries.

A very special thank-you goes to Letty and Tomasa for transporting the food this week, and to Letty, Tomasa, and Mercedes for their monthly volunteer day at Diakonía in Guayaquil. These are long days filled with work and approximately six hours of commuting, and we are so grateful for their dedication.

We also appreciate the volunteers who regularly recruit family members when we need extra help. This week, Barb’s son Mike joined us!

Finally, a shout-out to Carrie, who braved the scooter trip to make a home delivery– Ecuadorian style. Every bag packed, every mile traveled, and every helping hand makes this program possible.

Today was Foodbank distribution day, and before each family receives a bag of food, there is a lot of quiet work that happens behind the scenes.

Volunteers sort, count, organize, lift, pack, check, and prepare each item so the distribution can run smoothly. It truly takes a village to help support a village, and we are grateful for every person who gives their time and energy to make this work possible.

Today’s bags were filled one item at a time, with care and purpose. Each staple represents more than food. It represents community, dignity, and the reminder that neighbors can help carry one another through difficult seasons.

Thank you to our volunteers, donors, and community partners who continue to make the Foodbank possible.

This week at the Foodbank, we gave out so much fresh produce that some beneficiaries had to call family members to help carry everything home.

That is a beautiful problem to have.

Fresh food means healthier meals, fuller tables, and a little more peace for families trying to stretch what they have. We were also able to include cookies as a small sweet treat for this weekend’s Mother’s Day celebrations.

As Mother’s Day approaches, we are reminded of the mothers, grandmothers, aunties, and caregivers who do so much to keep families fed, loved, and strong. The Foodbank is one way we can support them — by helping place nourishing food on the table.

Thank you to everyone who makes this work possible. This week, the bags were heavy and the hearts were full.

This week’s Foodbank distribution was about more than food—it was about connection, learning, and impact.

We were joined by a group of student interns who will be working with Spirit of Wellness over the next four weeks as part of their educational program.

During the distribution, they helped sort and organize food, assist with distribution, and—most importantly—spend time speaking with the families we serve.

Through these conversations, they gained firsthand insight into the challenges many in our community face and the role the Foodbank plays in supporting them.

This is how we build stronger communities—not only by meeting immediate needs, but by educating and inspiring future leaders to serve with understanding and compassion.

Your support makes all of this possible.
