Site: https://firehorserefuge.org is a 501(c)(3) Private Operating Foundation (POF) primarily funded by the Cates-Martin family, which allows us to focus on our mission without relying heavily on public contributions. Our purpose is to rescue unhandled BLM mustangs from the slaught

er pipeline and find them safe, stable, and loving homes. This is accomplished by purchasing horses at auctions, from kill buyers and feedlots, and facilitating their placement into sanctuaries and private homes. Remarkably, all of this work is done online rather than at our facility. In 2024, we helped over 60 horses escape the slaughter pipeline. At our private facility, we care for four horses who serve as "kill pen" rescue mascots. Three of them are minimally handled, formerly wild mustangs, failed by the BLM adoption incentive and sale programs, and one is a domestic senior horse with special needs, that was used up then thrown away. These horses act as ambassadors to raise awareness about the harsh realities faced by America's unwanted equines. Many are exported for slaughter abroad, where they endure inhumane treatment, including having their throats slit and being dismembered while still conscious. Horses are highly sentient beings with the ability to heal and teach humans, and we are committed to passing the SAFE Act (Save America’s Forgotten Equines Act) during the 2025-2026 legislative session to protect them. This legislation would fully ban horse slaughter in the U.S. and stop the exportation of horses for this purpose. If you love horses, you’ll likely be horrified by the fate many unwanted and "no longer useful" horses face. If you’re not deeply moved by this cause, our organization may not be the right fit for you. We are passionate about saving these animals and devote ourselves wholeheartedly to their wellbeing. As a POF, our facility is not open to the public, and visits are by invitation only. All visitors must sign a liability waiver. Protecting the health and wellbeing of our own herd is a top priority. These horses are not here to serve or work for us; instead, we work for them. We provide them with sanctuary, decompression, trust, and respect, including allowing them to say no and to express themselves freely. They are never subjected to harsh, abusive, or dominating energy, nor are they ridden or “cowboyed.” Horses reflect how they are treated, serving as mirrors of the energy around them and are impeccable judges of character. Our mission is rooted in love, respect, and dedication to these incredible animals. Everything we do is for the benefit of our horses and for equines everywhere. PLEASE HELP US SPARE THEM

Ending Horse Slaughter in Canada - Another Step Forward

We have received confirmation that the Bouvry Exports slaughter plant in Fort Macleod, Alberta, is permanently closed. The facility is no longer accepting horses for slaughter! This news comes after months of speculation, with horse rescuers reporting empty pens and very little activity at the plant.

The news was further confirmed by a prolific kill buyer, who stated today that horses will likely now be trucked to Viandes Richelieu (a division of Bouvry Exports) for slaughter in Quebec.

We celebrate the closure of Bouvry Exports but realize that there is still work to be done! Horses across Canada and from the U.S. will continue to be transported to Quebec for slaughter. This industry, as well as the live exports of draft horses to Japan for slaughter, must end completely.

We thank horse advocates for their work in bringing one chapter of this horrific industry to a close. Well done!
Now let's place the issue of horse slaughter where it really belongs - within the troubled pages of history books. Let's end this industry in Canada.
