What do public lands mean
to you? To me it means long
hikes with the family.
Smelling the wildflowers.
And views that take your breath away.

For most of my junior high and high school years, my dad and I lived in different states.

We stayed close though. He had a personal rule that no matter what time I called, he would answer. It helped that he often worked the graveyard shift as a janitor, so I just assumed he was always awake. Looking back, I'm pretty sure that wasn't always true, but he never let on. Whether it was a bad day or a random 3 a.m. philosophical discussion about life, he picked up the phone.

Another way we stayed connected was through adventure. Every summer we'd take off on either a hiking or biking trip together for a week.

This week marks 21 years since we biked from Ogden, Utah, to Boise, Idaho. He sent me this photo from that trip this morning.

Tonight, we'll be hiking and camping with him and my own kiddos.

It won't be quite as intense as a 359 mile bike ride, but it will be time well spent with family and the outdoors.

Side quested so hard we started a mini backyard composting program.

About 8 months ago, we canceled all of our streaming services. Now we borrow DVDs from our local library for free and sometimes buy them there for 25¢, which helps support their programming. We also pick them up at garage sales. Since making the switch, our screen time has decreased and the way we watch things feels much more intentional again. Turns out having fewer options has been a good thing for our family.

Another commercial pickup from our favorite smoothie shop, Press Juice Bar.
88 pounds collected today, bringing our total to 3,626 pounds of organic waste diverted from landfills since September 2024 through our mini free backyard composting program.
Every bit counts, and we’re grateful for every neighbor, friend, and local business helping keep food waste out of landfills.

We had egg cartons dropped off on our porch this weekend along with 9 pounds of kitchen scraps, bringing our total to 3,538 pounds diverted from landfills through our mini free backyard composting program.

The egg cartons are headed to some of our homestead friends, and we also love when people drop off aluminum cans, plastic bags, and plastic bottle caps.

We’re hoping to create a bottle cap art project to help visualize just how many plastic bottles the average American uses in a year. Sometimes seeing the scale of waste in person makes a bigger impact than reading a statistic.

Also, cucumber beetles are currently destroying my crops, so if anyone has natural solutions that actually work, I’m all ears.
