If you’ve ever wondered why ladybugs show up in some gardens and not others, here’s the secret.
It starts with their babies.
Ladybug larvae don’t look anything like the red spotted beetles we all recognize, but they do a lot of the heavy lifting. Each one can eat hundreds of aphids before becoming an adult.
So if you want ladybugs to stick around, they need something to eat. Aphids are their go to.
I know it feels backwards, but a small number of aphids actually helps bring ladybugs in and gives them a reason to stay.
I’ve learned to stop trying to make my garden perfectly clean and instead let it find a little balance. That’s when things really start working together.
A healthy garden isn’t spotless. It’s alive. 🌱

Hey Friends,
I’ve been trying to figure out how to word this for a bit. As some of you may or may not know, we’ve been running a mini free backyard composting program for the last 2 years alongside our neighbors. Together, as a street, we’ve diverted 3,225 pounds of organic waste.
It started out small, just my family and one used composter, and we slowly learned, invited friends to join along, and expanded our system. Now we’re up to 4 composters, and after trying several enclosed systems, we landed on the Aerobin 400. It really cooks kitchen scraps, has a small footprint, and keeps critters out.
We’ve seen how effective small scale composting can be every single day. It’s simple. Small actions leading to real, measurable impact that helps the community and the earth.
We’re trying to facilitate the purchase of 6 more to help start other small composting programs through an organization I volunteer with.
We’re buying them from Exaco Greenhouses in Pflugerville, Texas, and need to get them to Waxahachie, hopefully this week or next. It’s about a 5 hour round trip and would need to be done during business hours. I can transport 3 in my minivan, but I can’t move all 6 on my own.
Thank you for letting me know if you’re willing to lend a hand.

🌱 If you’re in the Dallas area, it’s time to sow your okra seeds!
Okra is one of my favorite crops to grow. It’s incredibly prolific, thrives in our Texas heat, and requires very little maintenance once it gets going.
Bonus, it’s not just the pods you can use. The leaves are edible too and can be added to smoothies for an extra boost.
If you’ve been looking for an easy, productive crop to try this season, this is your sign.

Is Reencle worth the investment to divert meat, dairy and bones from the waste stream for our free mini backyard composting program?

"Good morning, Dearest Ones! I do hope your Wednesday is going well.

During our walk this past Saturday, Madeline pointed out these western redbud trees. She said the flowers and buds are edible. I suggested we try some. She said going into someone’s yard to forage without their permission was a breach of etiquette. 🤷‍♂️

On my morning walk yesterday, in my own neighborhood, I came across this redbud in a public walkway. I tasted a couple. They have a crisp texture with a mild sweet-tart flavor. I appreciate wise daughters and smartphone plant ID apps. 😊

Love ya!"

Wednesday morning text from my dad shared with permission.

🌱 Mini Free Backyard Composting Program 🌱
Hi, my name is Madeline, and I run a neighborhood composting program right here in our community. Together, we’ve already diverted 3,176 pounds of organic waste from the landfill.
These are the jars I provide to neighbors to collect their food scraps, but the best part is you don’t need anything fancy to get started. A simple glass pickle jar works just as well.
Every banana peel, coffee ground, and veggie scrap adds up. Instead of creating methane in a landfill, it becomes nutrient rich compost that gives back to our soil.
Small, simple habits can make a real difference when we do them together.
If you’ve ever thought about composting, this is your sign to start.

Pineapple was on sale at HEB this week… which means canning season over here 🍍
This is one of my favorite things to put up. It’s simple, beautiful on the shelf, and tastes like sunshine later.
Here’s how I do it:
🍍 How much to buy
About 3 lbs per quart
~21 lbs = 7 quarts
~13 lbs = 9 pints
🍍 What to look for
Firm, ripe pineapples (sweet smell, slight give, not mushy)
🍍 Prep
Wash
Peel and remove eyes
Cut out the tough core
Slice or cube
🍍 Simple syrup
1 cup sugar : 3–4 cups water
Heat until dissolved.
🍍 Packing (raw pack method)
Add pineapple directly to jars
Pour hot syrup over the fruit
Leave ½ inch headspace
Remove air bubbles, wipe rims, add lids
🍍 Processing (boiling water bath)
Process for 20 minutes
Let cool undisturbed, listen for the seals, and enjoy that little row of jars on the counter 💛
And nothing goes to waste over here:
Scraps went straight into the compost
Skins and tougher pieces went into the dehydrator
I’ve read you can grind the dried skins into a powder for teas or smoothies… so we’re experimenting with that next. I’ll report back if it’s a win.

Composting Should Be Convenient For You, It Will Help You Be More Likely To Stick With It.

We’ve spent the last two weeks transplanting sunflowers from garden beds to pots to be given away 🌻
Native sunflowers are powerhouses in ecology and are considered a keystone plant 🌱 They support pollinators, feed wildlife, and help build healthier soil.
Excited to get these into the community and see them spread 🌼
