Join our community for resources, success stories, and opportunities. Upwardly Global's founder, Jane Leu, was working in the refugee resettlement field and toured a New York poultry production plant that was considered a model employer for refugees. The owner introduced Jane to two of his best employees: a former engineer from I

raq and a surgeon from Bosnia. Disheartened by the loss of talent, Jane realized there was no infrastructure to help highly skilled immigrants and refugees regain their careers and contribute to the U.S. Jane launched Upwardly Global in 2000 from her kitchen table and began equipping work-authorized newcomers with the tools to rebuild their professional careers. Today, Upwardly Global is a national organization with offices in four metropolitan areas. We have matched thousands of immigrants with jobs that leverage their professional experience and skills, and we continue to pursue Jane’s vision of a nation where country of origin is not a barrier to success.

You already know what you bring.

Years of experience.
Skills you’ve built.
Work you’ve done.

If you’re struggling to be seen and recognized for your skills and value, know that you’re facing the same challenge many immigrants have faced and overcome. A new system doesn’t erase what you’ve accomplished, you just need to learn to navigate it differently.

If you’re a work-authorized immigrant professional with a bachelor’s degree or equivalent training, there are ways to help your experience translate and stand out.

"To lead the world, the U.S. cannot afford to ignore any of its talent."

In our 2025 Annual Report, Gregory Haile speaks directly to why this work matters, both for the individuals we serve and for the entire nation.

In 2025, we served 13,000+ jobseekers, placed 1,730+ in skill-aligned careers, and confirmed through a LinkedIn data breakthrough that more than 35,000 alumni have secured employment over 25 years.

In 2026, we plan to expand that impact by:

- Leveraging AI to address systemic hiring barriers.
- Deepening cross-sector partnerships that prioritize immigrant communities.
- Building data infrastructure that accurately reflects the long-term impact of our work.

: Struggling to answer "Tell me about a time when…" interview questions? The S.T.A.R. method is your framework:

⭐ Situation: What was the context?
⭐ Task: What was your role or responsibility?
⭐ Action: What specific steps did YOU take?
⭐ Result: What was the outcome or impact?

This simple framework helps you walk employers through real examples of your skills in action, going beyond your resume to show how you think, work, and deliver results.

Immigrant talent is shaping the future of the U.S. workforce and economy.

A recent Deloitte article cited that between 2022 and 2024, the foreign-born labor force expanded at an average annual rate of 4%, compared to 1.1% for the native-born workforce. At the same time, population growth is slowing, placing increased importance on labor force participation to sustain long-term economic growth.

The impact is especially pronounced among highly skilled workers. Immigrants:
- Represent ~5% of the workforce, yet generate over 10% of national labor income
- Contribute nearly one-third of U.S. innovation
- Account for more than 25% of all patents, including 44% in the tech sector

These trends reinforce the importance of recognizing and integrating globally trained talent into the workforce. When Shafic arrived in the U.S. from Uganda, he found himself starting over — no network, no guidance, and no clear pathway back to the healthcare career he had already built.

It wasn’t until he connected with Upwardly Global that he began to find his footing again. Through our support for International Medical Graduates, Shafic navigated the complicated, often discouraging path to U.S. licensure and reclaimed the professional future he had worked so hard for.

Today, we’re celebrating his Match Day success, and the countless hours of persistence and belief that made this moment possible. Congratulations, Shafic! 💫
